Perceive, just so you know. Pink Floyd has played every single song off Piper live. You said just Astronomy and Overdrive but, your wrong. They even played Pow R Toc H and Flaming live through a good portion of 68.

Re: Let's be objective here...

I love Piper at the Gates of Dawn. A truly great album of the era. I personally would love it even under another name. Of course, I'm huge fan of late 60's psych rock in general. This album would be in my top five late-60's albums along with "In The Court of The Crimson King" by King Crimson, "Ogden's Nut Gone Flake" by The Small Faces, "Shades of Deep Purple" by Deep Purple, and "Wheels of Fire" by Cream. Nuff said, it's brilliant.

Re: Let's be objective here...

When it comes to Syd Barrett, "The Piper At The Gates of Dawn" is one of his finest works. But when it comes to Pink Floyd, I find it somehow out-of-place in their sound. I mean, think about it--their next album, "A Saucerful of Secrets" (which only contained one one song composed by Syd), sounded almost (ALMOST) totally different from "Piper." I think "Piper" was in Syd's style, not Pink Floyd's style.

It was Pink Floyd's style back then.

Re: Let's be objective here...

Back then, Syd WAS Pink Floyd style. Not even the other band members would disagree that Syd was the catalyst for their best work...back then.

I even detected on AMLoR, the stock PF custom of building the music around a single, almost endless note, which is a "Syd" trait if anything.

Re: Let's be objective here...

If Syd WAS Pink Floyd's style back then, that must mean PF was a one-man band in those days. I don't really think it was their style, it was Syd's style--seeing s how the less he became capable of contributing, the less Pink Floyd sounded like Syd.

Re: Let's be objective here...

Also, I think a lot of us would agree that each Pink Floyd album sounds different from the one before. In hypothetical thinking, I believe that if Syd Barrett had stayed with Pink Floyd throughout their entire career, remaining their principle songwriter, every album would sound the same--if he had stuck with that trait that Byron mentioned.

I'm sure he would have evolved, much like Roger.
