My friends don't understand me

My whole life has been quite misuderstood by the people around me... i'm 16, and I love music like Pink Floyd, Queen, The Beatles and also movies older that 1980 more or less... so my problem with my friends is that they don't understand why I love "old" music and films... For example, they tell me to live the moment, to listen to the current bands and stuff like that... But I mean, Floyd is a band that kids nowadays aren't familiar with... but I am... and I feel kind of lonely when they tell me those things... So "does anybody else in here feel the way I do" or am I just alone?

Re: My friends don't understand me

My daughter goes through the same thing as you, she is 14 years old and LOVES pink floyd, led zeppelin, the beatles and her friends think shes a freak. You have to listen to what YOU like, screw what they think. Besides, Pink Floyd, Zeppelin, Beatles, they have all stood the test of time.

Re: My friends don't understand me

The music nowadays sucks. The old Classic Rock is better. It seems like everyone at my school only likes punk and rap.

Re: My friends don't understand me

I think all P F fans come to find they are in the minority. Tell your disapproving friends to take a flying bite.

As Rick Nelson once put it "You can't please everyone, so you've got to please yourself".

Re: My friends don't understand me

What stratman said. In other words if you, we, and lots of other people are still listening Floyd's music that's because it is damn good, and always will be, the same way we are still listening to Beethoven, Mozart, Verdi.

Ahh yes.. Such sage advice from Old Rickky...

And I believe Mick said..."You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you just might find, you get what you need".

Re: My friends don't understand me

It's called individuality and your friends may be caught up in the false safety and comfort of the crowd whereas you know your own mind and tastes, so do as stratman suggested and tell your friends to go fish.

True friends will tell you when you are making a mistake and will help you blend in, as well as making most desicions for you. Do what they say without question. You'll be better for it.

Re: My friends don't understand me

Most of the bands and popstars that were cool when I was 16 (and I listened to my Floyd) now are nothing more than a joke. Something to remember and laugh about with friends after your saturday night's fourth beer.

Helen of Troy..
Yeh I go through the exact same thing.. especially since I'm a girl...I usually hear " You're a weirdo " at least 3 times in one day ( once being from my own parents )...But I get used to it
Actually, there's still some really cool guys at my school who like Floyd, and it's starting to grow on some of the preps. Hummm....

Re: My friends don't understand me

This is where i am the lucky one. Alot of my friends like jazz, led zeppelin, pink floyd (me and another guy), beatles and all oldies. But i think im the purest. Cause most of them like death metal but they have the taste for good music so they like black and death metal and also like oldies... I write like shit, damn it.
