Roger is an a**hole

What was Roger's trip during The Wall? He bases an album on an incident where he spit on a fan, and then he spits on his fellow bandmates. He insisited on singing and writing everything himself. Thankfully, Gilmour was able to bring in "Young Lust" "Comfortably Numb" and a few others to fix it up, and thank God he sang them. But why is Roger singing everything else? I always though Dave and Rick sang great together. Maybe Rick wasn't in his best shape for the album, but where did Roger get off forcing him to leave the band? He makes the dude cut his summer vacation after sitting in the studio for months doing nothing, and then he throws him out. And Roger even wanted to force Nick Mason out after hearing Jeff Porcaro play on "Mother." This guy really took all control and abused it.

Re: Roger is an a**hole

Well he wrote 90% of the album, came up with the concept (as he did for every single album from Dark Side onwards), who can blame him wanting to sing it as well? The Wall is supposed to be a mean album, Water's voice is well suited to that.

I don't think the rest of the band were entirely against him being sacked, his attitude was pretty crap at that point, and he parked his bum in the producers chair trying to keep his co-producer credit, Roger said you can have it if you do some work, but he didn't do anything. Gilmour has insisted that Rog and himself had a great working relationship during the recording of The Wall.

I think Roger had to take control, no-one else would have done much if he didn't, they look like a pretty indecicive lot without Roger to me. Look at what happened after he left. It took them 7 years between albums after he left, and they weren't even that good! As for Nick, I think he contributed a lot during the early-post Syd days, up until around Meddle though, when it was getting a lot more structured. And his contribution to Ummagumma proves that he couldn't write a song to save his life! His book is pretty good though, lots of pretty pictures. A nice light read

It was David Gilmour who hired Jeff Porcaro to play on "Mother". And it was Gilmour who hired Porcaro and other drummers to perform on "A Momentary Lapse Of Reason".

On the other hand I think Roger Waters never understood the importance of the other band members in the last year of his time in the band. My problem with most of the stuff Roger has done from "The Wall" and thereafter is that it has great potential, but is somewhat unfinished. Even "Amused To Death" which is one of my all time favourite records, miss some of The Gilmour feeling, The Wright sound and Nick Mason. (But even "The Grand Vizier's Garden Party miss Nick Mason")

Re: Roger is an a**hole

Yeah, what an asshole Roger was for writing that big hit single that sold millions of albums and provided Gilmour with enough name brand clout to sell out two huge world tours! What was he thinking!?!

Seriously though, do we REALLY need another thread about this?

Have you read this yet?

Thanks Botley, interesting!

WATERS -- I had a meeting with Dave in my garden in the South of France at which Dave said, "Let's get rid of Nick too." I bet he doesn't remember that. How inconvenient would that be? I went "Ooh, Dave, Nick's my friend. Steady!"

What do you think about the truth in that??

Ever noticed how Dave helped write most of the big hits from the Wall?
