Don't forget Rick's contribution to this album , it features some of his finest playing IMO and listening to it I find it hard to believe he (allegedly) made no contribution to the writing of any of the tracks....Hmmmm Mr Waters ??

True. He plays beautiful keyboard parts in Animals. The intro of Sheep, the synth in Dogs. Who knows me (or my site ) knows I am a great fan of Rick. We know how a certain album miss his contribution. And yes, maybe he deserves some writing credit, after all the songs were developed when they were playing live.

Re: Animals- Yay or Nay?

I agree, some of my favorite keyboard playing by Rick is in Animals. It doesn't stick out, like your saying "Wow, check out the guy on piano!" or whatever, but it compliments the rest of the music very well.

As for the whole writing credit, I think that Rog only gives credit out for writing the lyrics. As far as that goes I never understood why the albums don't just say "all songs by Pink Floyd" like other bands do. For years after buying Dark Side I thought that Roger Waters sang all the songs, mistakenly thinking that the name in parantheses meant the vocalist on that particular song.

Re: Animals- Yay or Nay?

Interesting how this thread reappeared... my last post was earlier this week about how much I hated Vera. Then I read this thread and what do I find, but people confessing how that song makes them cry. Well, I'm really at a loss for what to say about that.

I completely agree with Seamus Laughs' review 100%. You hit the nail on the head there, sir. I will also reiterate that PIGS ON THE WING (8-TRACK VERSION) is available on Snowy White's CD "Gold Top"! Buy it now, for Chrissake! It's worth every penny for that one song. That 3 1/2 minute slice of heaven could have been a hit single.

Echoes rekindled my fondness for Keep Talking, Sheep and Sorrow, too. Funny. They just fit together so well.

Re: Animals- Yay or Nay?

I actually saw one recently. Myself and Englar were atop some romantic cliffy cliff when one simply swam past. I've never ever seen that before.

Bloody brilliant, frankly.

Re: Animals- Yay or Nay?

I guess this is as good a topic as any to break wind across:

'Animals' - personally, I have a huge attachment for much of it's content. Unlike some of the albums that followed its release (you know, the ones that have everyone, including my Aunty Olive, playing on or writing for it), Animals always sounds like the last reasonable attempt at collaboration between members of the group; everything is well concieved - wonderfully idiosyncratic instrumental performances and a libretto which is acute as ever. It's not as universal as DSOTM or even as 'complete' a statement as WYWH, but, considering that some of the material had been previously performed in one form or another before recording commenced, it served to clear the decks of a backlog of significant music and help keep up the payments on the Aston Martin.
David Bowie was reported once as saying that after Syd Barrett left the Floyd, there 'was no Pink Floyd for me' - in some ways, that's how it was for me after Animals was released. Yes, The Wall is an incredible piece of work and just about everything since exudes (or at least presumes to portray) many key Floyd qualities, but I think the spirit of these subsequent releases is a whole other thing. And so they should.

I'll not even attempt to quantify Animals with a mark out of ten, but I will say that it stands well against any of the other Floyd output of the 1970s ... and lets face it; after the wad which is DSOTM & WYWH, anyone would find it difficult to keep it up after that lot ... (although, I understand that a little 'Red Bull' can help make a difference).

Re: Animals- Yay or Nay?

The 'Gong is working today and all is as it should be.

Just to clarify my comment that the Floyd lost something after Animals (how do you designate a single-word titled album, a la DSOTM ? 'A' ? ... doesn't do it, does it ?). I digress. Obviously the Floyd continued in one form or another, much like it did after when Syd lost his way, but they certainly had to work far harder for this taxpayer to part with hard-earned readies (and, I must add, I have ocassionally parted with them, regardless of momentary lapses of satisfation). From TW onwards (ah, The Wall - see, it doesn't work with these short titles), all have something substantial to offer the canon, but something changed ... you may call it spirit, vibe, mystique or Burma (ke !) ... whatever it was, the axis moved a few degrees to the right and it became more brand-name than band-name. I realise that key 'external' personnel have, over the years, left their stamp on various recordings (engineers, arrangers, picts), but beyond A (and I will press this point about shortening titles) the integration of external contribution seemed to go beyond the pale (Kamen, Ezrin, Manzenera, Samson and, for chrissakes, Toni Tenelle !, et al) - but then again, internal dominence was the decider here. Still, one must respect a band for its desire to continue, regardless of how diluted/enhanced its music becomes. If it floats your boat ...

More importantly, this all reveals a new thread possibility ... what of this album-title-shortening-deal. We have the biggies:

DSOTHM - obvious !
WYWH - Bzzzzt ! Correct again.
AMLOR - Bzzzzt ! You'll win the car at this rate !

But what of 'Animals' ? How does 'Meddle' figure in all of this ? And what are we going to do about the 'Meddle'/'More' issue ? Delete one from the catalogue due to an administrative error ? It's enough to scare the sheep out of ewe. Should we knock this one the head here, or open up this soon-to-fester sore elsewhere ?

Jai Guru Deva.
