WTF Happened???

What happened?! For about a week I couldn't log in, nobody else was logged in, and the site was all jacked. Well, at least it's fixed now. I thought we had all lost our sn's and what not.

Seems to happen quite often here.

Believe it or not, operating a website with membership in the thousands is not an incredibly easy thing, particularly when ISPs, webhosting companies, and the like are continually changing policies, changing ownership, etcetera.

It consumes a lot of time. And money.

Of course it will happen again, I don't know of any internet site that doesn't go down now and again for whatever reason.

Excuses.... I've seen it done, and I've helped do it. You just have to know what you are doing.

Erm, I'm doing it at the moment, with contact with IT support staff immediately and it's still not that easy at times.

We didn't need IT support staff. We were the support staff, so I guess that helped.

A few friends and I RAN the public school system's entire network for two years. I mean administrators, school board, teachers, students, etc, etc, etc. We built it from the ground up, and that was more than just forum/message board.

Well, at the moment I'm running the website for the largest society in my college, about 9000 members. So far there's about 3000 members on the message board, well over 1000 of whom are active. It's not fun when the network crashes. We have all sorts of constraints on bandwith at any one time too, which makes it awkward.

I see your point. I guess we were lucky. We set up the network, had the right number of uber-techies (Everyone but me. As I was just a techie.), and we only answered to a few select people which gave us the freedom to do what we wanted with the system. It all worked out quite well.

We have a very large network too, which leads to problems, esspecially as we have to cater for both Windows and Mac machines.
