Its rather selfish to look at it in terms of material, for one even though there has only been 2 'Pink Floyd Albums' they were pretty good. Think aobut it though, if they had stayed together with all that tension the music wouldve been crap, and the tours would have been far less then enjoyable

This is how i interpret what happened Roger was never originally the driving force behind the band that he became, it was Syd. When Syd was forced to leave, there was no clearly defined leader in terms of creativity, which IMO led to SOS (barring some input from Syd) being an attempt to emulate Syd's style. Particular reference to Corporal Clegg and Bike. Barring Compilations and Soundtrack albums which it is fair to say will most likely be written around the theme of the film, using input from the film producers. The next three albums are Ummagumma, AHM and Meddle Ummagumma is an experiment of individual creativity which is the making of the album and also the breaking of it as there is no clear direction with the tracks, except for Dave's but then there you have the problem of the tracks being nothing spectacular. This album should be praised for what it set out to do although the end product is questioned by the majority. AHM and Meddle are a progression from Ummagumma realising that individual work is not as good as their collaborative work. IMO seeing how well the soundtracks went and how badly Ummagumma went encouraged pf to start writing around a theme to give direction to their songs. This all leads to the arrival of the golden era as far as the band are concerned where everybody was pulling in the same direction and everything came together. End result: DSotM With the success of DSoTM came the realisation that the band could be creatively more successful with a theme. It is from here on in that it becomes clear that Roger is the more gifted creatively and as the albums progress, more and more input is from Roger. The tension began to build after DSoTM and culminated with the Wall where Rick became to some extent a sacrificial lamb, as emphasised by his re-introduction later on. This allowed the Floyd to produce another album in TFC, although by this time the input is all Rogers. Roger thought Dave and Nick were holding him back and Dave & Nick thought Rog was taking over, thus the inevitable break up. Sorry it was so long, but thats how I see it.

I've been hearing it was 2 things: -David wanted the group to work together on albums. Roger said he only wrote about 3 songs in 5 years -David wanted the group to go back to its musical roots, not the lyrical ones

Rick left the band after The Wall mainly because the rest of the band didn't think he was pulling his weight. It is my opinion that Rick going prolonged the existence of the band for another album because they thought that getting rid of Rick would solve their problems, but it didn't, hence he was a sacrificial lamb.
