"By the cold and religious we were taken in hand Shown how to feel good and told to feel bad * Tongue-tied and terrified we were taught how to pray * Now our feelings run deep and cold as the clay And strung out behind us the banners and flags Of our possible pasts lie in tatters... And rags."

I think I kinda agree with most of you on the TFC lyrics. I have just listened to TFC in its entirety and felt not so much a chill but an overwhelming feeling of emotion that is very difficult to put into words, especially at the end. The song The Final Cut is particularly moving so I would have to say that these lyrics out of all of TFC are the most emotive. I think I'll have to re-evaluate my opinion of TFC now

I know you all like to "bash" Gilmour's lyrics, but some of his efforts have meant as much, if not more, to me than Waters: Eg "Did you get rid of all the voices in your head, Do you now miss them and the things that they said", or "Thinking that we're getting older and wiser, When we're just geting old". But back to Roger, um, "we set out in the spring, with a trunk full of books about everything, about solar devices, and how nice natural childbirth is", or "the moment of clarity, faded like charity does, sometimes, I opened one eye, and I put out my hand, just to touch your soft hair, to make sure in the darkness, that you were still there, and i gotta admit, I was just a little afraid" I got shivers just writing that last one.

Why not to mention some Syd's classics? "Winding, finding places to go. And then one day - hooray! Another way for gnomes to say Oooooooooomray. Ooooooooooooooomray" "The black and green scarecrow is sadder than me But now he's resigned to his fate 'Cause life's not unkind - he doesn't mind. He stood in a field where barley grows." "I know a mouse, and he hasn't got a house. I don't know why. I call him Gerald. He's getting rather old, but he's a good mouse. You're the kind of girl that fits in with my world. I'll give you anything, ev'rything if you want things." Real touching poetry, isn't it?

And here is a source you might find unlikely...but perhaps the reason I am so deeply touched is that I see myself--traits and feelings I recognise. In this too is the power of an artist. He doesn't have to be Mr. Waters. Or in other cases, there's actually a good bit of advice buried in there. "Everybody cares about the weather... Everybody should know better-- What a waste of time!" It's simple, yes...but think about it. Haven't we got better things to do than wasting our time on worry about things we can't control? This is actually good advice. The whole of "Paintbox"...just feels very familiar. I'm not exactly the world's most extraverted person, and I feel kind of out of place in the social scene...like it's simply not me. But the most telling part is where he freezes on the phone. VERY, VERY familiar...sometimes if I have something important, I have to write down what I want to say or I can't get through. "Tell me--how do you feel?" Yeah, I know. The song is about a one-night stand. Duh. But somehow this is touching to hear. "Words have no meaning But hold such a feeling Can there be a way out of here?" Sometimes I feel like no one understands why heated conflict wears on me the way it does. I simply feel horrid if I am around too much negativity--almost a trapped sort of feeling. This song really strikes a chord with me. "Make a choice--stay behind or follow me." Considering that Mr. Wright was not that far from leaving the Floyd, it's rather chilling in a way to hear him asking this question. I think he senses it all coming to an end, and knows he's going to be left in the cold. After all...remember that no one followed him. "Between these lines I know you see a man Who's not quite sure who he is or where he stands." Again...it's simply put, but I almost get a chill from this "direct address" to the listener. And what's more...haven't we all been there, caught at the crossroads? A lot of other good stuff from "Holiday", as well...lots of familiar feelings. Oh, and there's that incredible "Pink's Song". That simply makes me cry. I feel like I could be there with him, going through that awful breakup, seeing that coming on the horizon and being unable to stop it. A deep sadness...no hate, but there is resignation, I suppose. Unlike the fury of the other two Floydians...these feelings just kind of make sense to me. You don't have to be the fine craftsman of words that Mr. Waters is to make a point, to say something that can ring in the hearts of your listener, make you truly recognise yourself in someone else's words. That, too, is the power of a true artist who gives his work right from the heart.

I'm surprised no one has said this one yet.... "Ashes and diamonds Foe and friend We were all equal in the end." Ever noticed how the songs that end their cds have incredibly mindblowing lyrics.

I'd have to say... "You have to be trusted by the people that you lie to. So that when they turn their backs on you, You'll get the chance to put the knife in." "And when you lose control, you'll reap the harvest you have sown. And as the fear grows, the bad blood slows and turns to stone. And it's too late to lose the weight you used to need to throw around. So have a good drown as you go down all alone, dragged down by the stone." ^I just love it when Roger first sings on the song Dogs. There's just so much emotion in those lyrics and in the way he sings it.
