Illinois. Rantoul. 1978: Newbies arrive wet and fresh off the bus from Air Force basic training originally from heaven-knows-where, some so stunned by it they'll believe just about anything sounding like directions or orders shouted at them.

One ruse was to have them stand guard with wooden rifles Watching the Skies and to raise the appropriate alarm should a tornado be spotted...until they eventually discovered the jest for themselves. Some days you'd have takers, other days maybe not.

PITT is a dull acronym for Personnel In Technical Training and I forget what PING stood for.
