Re: The Mars Volta

I'm going to see them (actually, to work security for their show in Toronto) on Friday. I have never listened to them before and have no idea what to expect.

Re: The Mars Volta

omg Botely.. sigh.. I am so so so jealous (Though are you working the front, where you have to have your back to the stage and watch the crowd, cos that'd suck). I don't know if you'll like them. I've decided to stop speculating on whether people will or not. So many people I thought would hate them love them and vice versa. Just know that you've managed to make me positively miserable. I'm off to see Tori Amos soon, but I'd gladly trade in that ticket for a Mars Volta show.. enjoy my man, their live show changed my life (well perhaps not, but I did buy their cd afterwards and there was no turning back, I suppose it did change my life because it opened up even more of an interest in Latin Salsa, which I'd always been intrigued about, but never bothered to really look into, and now I'm discovering a huge world of music and party and fun)
anyway.. I'll stop my rant now. I went to pick up my EP from the store the other day.. and they'd ordered the wrong thing!!! They merely ordered the album Frances the Mute on vinyl as opposed to the single "The Widow" that also happens to have the album's title track on it (the album doesn't have the title track on it) Well I was not impressed, they whipped it out and I was like "uh.. that's not the right thing" sigh.. so they've gone ordered it again, I hope they ordered the right thing now.. sigh

cheers

Re: The Mars Volta

This group is going to be at the KROQ Weenie Roast in a couple weeks, so I'll be seeing them. I've just heard one song from them..but it's quite good...(probably the same single everyone else has heard)

Re: The Mars Volta

Just in case anyone was in any doubt, Lejla has a mild liking for the Mars Volta. From time to time.

Re: The Mars Volta

shush you.. I converted another person at uni today to the ways of The Mars Volta! Am I good or what? Well.. are they good or what is more the point, but hey.
Actually, I had something really signifciant to say, I was on the bus today and was thinking how jealous I was of Botley, and something occured to me and for the hell of me I can't remember what, so it seems it'll have to wait.

cheers

Re: The Mars Volta

nice one! They had really cool t-shirt at the BDO when I saw them live. But they were on in the late afternoon, so by the time i got to see them, i'd already bought a shirt for another band. Biggest waste of money ever, not that the band are crap, but th t-shirt sucks, it got all deformed after one wash AND, it know comes to half way up my stomach, pah!

anyway..

Re: The Mars Volta

Some dude waiting in line with me to see NIN was wearing a Mars Volta shirt. Did I mention they are playing in the same venue where I saw NIN two nights in a row?

Re: The Mars Volta

nope.. no you didn't..

Man, that significant thing I had to say, I remembered it last night whilst lying in bed, drifting off to sleep, and now I've forgotten again!! this is so annoying.
Anyhow, you must report back as soon as you get home from seeing them. I wonder if they'll do Miranda That Ghost Just Isn't Holy Anymore, I haven't seen it in any of the recent set lists, which is a shame because it's such a great track. I'm pretty sure they'll do L'Via which, incidentally they're planning as their next single, and Omar is directing the video clip again. Though, the record company is making them cut it back to 3.5 mins.. it's a 13 minute song.. btw

Re: The Mars Volta

I have no idea what they played, but it all flowed together as one continuous uninterrupted piece, which I thought was great. They're all brilliant performers and I would have liked to have watched them more but my back was turned for most of the concert to keep an eye on the front row. It sounded good though!

Re: The Mars Volta

if every song of theirs was as good as The Widow, they would kick ass, that song is amazing, i've had it one repeat for a while now, but i don't like the rest of the album.

Re: The Mars Volta

The Widow is rather mediocre, especially in comparison to the rest of the songs on the album.

Re: The Mars Volta

So Cedric didn't talk at all? He doesn't usually, but sometimes he goes on these rants about moshing, and how the crowds are retards for moshing and they all need to learn how to dance, and how he bets they're all just white males who watch MTV and have pent up aggression and then calls them all sheep. Other times he's much nicer about it, and he just says how dancing is more fun and they should all try it out and be nice to each other and not hurt anyone and look out for the little people, because coming from two little people (himself and Omar) he knows what it's like to pushed around. I also remember stories about people throwing stuff at them and him saying stuff like "hey you don't do that to your favourite band man, I'm just doing my effing job, you do that at an effing Limp Bizkit concert, but we're The Mars Volta, we're not hardcore" I remeber there also being a story about some guy throwing some ice at him and Ced was like "Hey you effing do that again I'll come down there and smack you in the face with my mic, and I don't give a shit if you sue me".. hahahaha.. that man is a god.
So my point was.. did people mosh a lot or are they finally getting through to their fans? The lads are major pacifists and personally I really like that about them.

It's a shame you couldn't see them though.. they're amazing when they break out the salsa moves. I'm glad you liked the music, this is the part where you go and get their albums right?

PinkZeppelin, no offense, but you need ears. The Widow is the most average song on that album, the crescendos and the movements and the power of the music is so much more overwhelming in other parts of that album. Like L'Via with its massive guitar and awesome salsa grooves, and in Cassandra with the "No there's no light in the darkest of your furthest reaches" and that really awesome brass bit towards the end. Just Ced's vocals alone on Miranda make it a standout track, and the composition of that track is mindbogglingly awesome.
I think you need to take a better listen and even better read the lyrics while you're at it and think a little bit more about the story.
I know all this sounds pretty rude and like I'm not respecting your views. I do.. but I just think you're missing some amazing stuff there if you think that The Widow is their best song (a fine song indeed, better than anything else on the radio, but TMV are more than just about that.. ya know)

The crowd was dancing and getting into it so there wasn't any need for that

Yeah, actually I picked up Frances for $9.99 at HMV yesterday.
