Re: The Mars Volta

Hmm...maybe. But I think the high level of musicianship displayed in their music would probably discredit your claim.

Re: The Mars Volta

I think you understimate REAL punk, not the Blink 182 and Green Day Bollocks you hear these days, but REAL punk. Honestly, go listen to Fugazi and ATDI and you'll get what I mean, even Ced refers to Mars Volta as a punk band sometimes, but his defenition of it is different anyway... sigh... i think it is time to some of that transcripting, so i can get across what I mean..

meanwhile.. lets talk about lyrics... well Ced's POETRY really. I think this is his finest work

It’s been thirteen seconds
Since you all last said
I’ve become the apparition
You predicted for my death
You said that flirting brings you
Closer to the end
You can bait into the water
But you’ll never get the hint
And like a stain of bricks goes
Dancing by your head
Plucked from an icebox
Grafted on my skin
My coat has hid the marks
Mink hits the shovel fix
Near the sway of pendulums
Boar abrasions and a kiss
She said, “I’ll never let them hurt you
I’ll never let them in
What you took from me is mine
What is mine I’ll never give”
Mascara glass in the molar weeds
Herash,a serpent infancy
His eye patch pussed a gap of sand
Into his shine a sedative
More and more the dirt collects
You’ll never find her body now
Her closet festered in a secret air
Blonde underneath a blackened hair
He never knew the colony
Gestated in his bed
Mingle with the carnivores you’ve something both in common now
Till one day his wasted breath
Swollen throat and karma debt
Set foot inside a parlor, to find her drunken by receipts
He held her by the ankles
Gutted at the nave, yes gutted and depraves
He tied a rope around her legs
And let her hang for seven days

This never happened, but I saw you leave,
And crawl into a bed of broken windows

They're the lyrics for Frances the Mute.. I cried the first time I heard that song

cheers

Re: The Mars Volta

Lyrics aren't poetry, and I'm ready to argue anyone on this point if they make me.

Re: The Mars Volta

As much as I am a fan of FtM, I think Deloused is a much better musical experince, just the way it is put together is incredible. I really can't say that I have been in the best....ermm mind frame lets put it, to really compare the two...but I am a big fan of Deloused

Re: The Mars Volta

I'm pretty sure I have, but whether I've heard that song in particular is beside the point. Just the words Tom Waits prove your point.

Pink Money, I personally think that FtM is much better engineered and produced, but hey, that's just me. FtM gets more of an emotinal rise out of me.

cheers

Re: The Mars Volta

Don't get me wrong Sydney I like FtM and I do too agree that it is more emotionaly charged...but theres just something about Deloused that gets to me, honestly I think it's the opening song: "clipside of the pinkeye flight, I'm not the percent you think survives...." ohhhhh man

Re: The Mars Volta

I think Frances the Mute is the more creative album and I enjoy it a lot, but Deloused just knocks my socks off. When I first heard it I thought it sounded like King Crimson mixed with Rush and played 150 times faster. It has this stacatto assault to it that is just relentless. Track three, Roulette Dares, one of my favorite songs of all time, the guitar part right before the vocals kick in for the chorus sounds like some Black Sabbath would come up with in their prime.
Whichever album you may prefer, that is a great band.

Re: The Mars Volta

PM.. have you read the storybook? You really really must, it's fantastic. You can get it at www.goldstandardlabs.com Seriously, if you love Deloused that much, the storybook is just going to blow you away.

Zem, that's a nice description. I agree that Deloused just hits you a hell of a lot harder. I think that's why a lot of people who didn't like Deloused are finding the new album easier to swallow. I honestly still can't make up my mind on which one I like better.

cheers
