Re: The Mars Volta

No I won't Lo, he can dislike the band all he likes, I just get really pissed off when people bag bans on a forum without giving a real reason. I don't read the threads about Linkin Park or whatever cos it's not worth my time reading them or pissing off the people who do like them.. ya see my point?

cheers

The thread was about Mars Volta. So I put I didn't like them I don't see why an opinion should get you banned. At the drive-in were much better anyway.

Re: The Mars Volta

At the drive in was nowhere near as good. They were a great band for sure, but nowhere near as much soul as TMV. I've cried listening to TMV, and I've gone on a million VERY personal journies listening to it, ATDI never did that for me. Plus Cedric has grown so much since ATDI, he's just become this extraodinary poet who seems to be really fitting into his style these days. ATDI was just a very good punk band.

Punk band???? I don't think they were at all a punk band....ATDI kicked ass so it's hard to compare TMV and them.

Oh yes, I was just joking of course. And I agree with you, don't just jump into a thread just to bash something...it's ok to say you don't like them, but if you put reasoning behind it and everything...well, that's different.

They weren't punk in the sense of guns and roses.. or any of that bollocks that you see about the place now that calls itself punk.. but they were a punk band.. sorta like Fugazi (who were a heavy influence)

cheers

Re: The Mars Volta

sigh.. sorry, I totally got my wires crossed.. lol.. I'm well aware that guns and roses weren't a punk band. I think I meant to say The Sex Pistols, and it came out as guns and roses. I came back to read this reply and I was like.. "I never said guns and roses, duh, i know they're not a punk band" and then re-read my post and had to think about why the hell i said guns and roses in the first place! lol.. right, now that I got that shitty part of the post over and done with.. I'm going to continue with my argument for ATDI being a punk band.

Listen to songs like Red Planet, that's just a punk song! Sure they weren't conventional punk, but there were very strong punk elements in there. The problem with calling them a punk band, was that two of the members (Ced and Omar that is) wanted to experiment more. They've played in punk bands all their lives, but they got to a point where they wanted to experiment more, and that's where you got ATDI, though, that experimentation didn't go far enough for them. Cedric talks about it all the time, they started having band meetings about improvising more, and that's just not the way to go about it. It became too many cooks spoil the broth sorta thing.

But seriously, there were strong punk elements in there.

THe mars volta puts on a great show and makes amazing albums, i saw them with system of a down. I wasnt even a system fan, they put on a rockin ass show, yes rockin ass. But back to The mars volta, its really good stuff, listen to some of thier work if u havent yet, get them on the radio, i want more albums from them. It is refreshing to hear this kinda of music with that kinda of progessive genuis and attention they do it with. its late, good night, but go on, talk about the volta

Re: The Mars Volta

Well, they're about to release a live album. Though, by the sounds of it, it's not going to be your ordinary live album. It's titled "Scabdates" and only about two of the track titles are recongnisable as TMV tracks that we know. Track listing is as follows

abrasions mount the timpani
take the veil cerpin taxt
a) gust of mutts
b) and ghosted pouts
caviglia
concertina
haruspex
cicatriz
a) pt I
b) pt II
c) pt III
d) pt IV

What I suspect they've done, is taken recordings from the last two yrs, and taken them to the studio and Omar's tinkered with them the way he tinkered with the Wilter The Widow version, where he put effects over Cedric's voice in the chorus.
Either way, the release date for Scabdates is set for November 8

They've also announced the last US show for this yr, and the last two European shows to take place in the UK before the ATP festivites. I suspect that in January they'll head over this way for the BDO and a couple of sideshows!!!! weee!!! and then a new album.. Along with Omar finishing up A Manual Dexterity, hopefully releasing the second half of that soundtrack, and oh yeah! The TMV DVD he's been working on, and the TMV movie.. phew.. the man never stops!

cheers

Re: The Mars Volta

I love the Mars Volta. I've got all their albums (Tremulant, De-Loused, Frances. No fancy EPs).
However, I've been listening to At The Drive-In a lot more lately.

Re: The Mars Volta

I've only got Rleationship of Command.. great album.. still doesn't measure up to what TMV are doing though. Something happened to Cedric between ATDI and TMV, it's like he decided he was going to learn to sing.. mmm good singing

My fancy EP collection is growing, thus far I have

Omar's solo album on double LP (black)

Tremulant, yellow

Deloused double LP, silver

Frances single EP, marble green

Frances 4 LP, glow in the dark special edition vinyl

L'Via 10'' picture disc EP w/ Bible and the Breathalyzer B side

And on order I have the Inertiatic and Tremulant 12'' picture discs by Storm Thorgerson.. mmmm.. vinyl goodness.

Scabdates will be avialalbe on vinyl in January.. weeeee!

Hey that's awesome! I don't own most of that stuff partly because I don't want to take the time to look for it, and because I don't have a record player! hah!

And if you really think Cedric couldn't sing with ATDI, i think you should take another serious listen to ROC. I used to think the same thing about that album (that it was just a great album), but I probably enjoy it just as much as Frances the Mute.
