Nick Masons drums

I saw a picture in the SACD version of Dark side of the moon in which nick mason is playing a clear drumkit. I know Keith Moon also played a similiar set around the same time and I believe John Bonham did as well. Could anyone give me information about this set, such as when Nick played it, who manufactured it, etc.?

They are made by Ludwig, and the line is called Vistalite. They're made of plastic (I want to say Perspex, but I'm not sure). Nick's was clear, Keith Moon had a clear set as well (which I hear he filled with water and fish on a live TV appearance), and John Bonham's was an amber-orange color.

They came in a variety of sizes and colors (including green, clear, amber, yellow, blue, red, among others). They also made a swirl-finish, which involved taking different colors and patterning them in a swirl fashion around the drum shell - horribly ugly, IMO, but interesting nonetheless.

I think Nick played his set in '72-'73. I haven't seen him play it anywhere else, I believe.

Ludwig started making these drums in the late '60s, and stopped making them in the mid-to-late '70s (I think). They've reissued the line since (only in clear, sadly), which I want a set of badly.

There you go.

Nice explanation!

Shaners can always be relied upon to answer any question about drums or keyboards.
