Re: WISH YOU WERE HERE.....10/10

Pink Pig, hace you heard The Wall? I'd think that would be self-undulgent, but not WYWH. An homage to a fallen comrade. Since when do musicians in general, and Pink FLoyd in particular, write about Joe public? Name an instance, except for The Final Cut, when this occured. Not to get on your case or anything, I just want to know where you are coming from.

Re: WISH YOU WERE HERE.....10/10

No, I see what Pink Pig means, if by self indulgent, he means the band, obviously taking the royal piss out of (transl.: making great fun of) the music industry/companies/culture, were just biting the hand that fed them, then yes, guilty.

Perhaps not.

I have to say that, as another concept album after the hugely popular PF opus, DSOTM, WYWH is V. impressive. I guess, for me, these two albums could define Pink Floyd, in a "Desert Island Discs" sort of way, but... (There's always one of those around when talking about Floyd)

Couldn't do without lots and lots of others not on those two albums.

Hm. WYWH is their best album as a collection of its parts (ie. there are no songs I don't like on the album) but I'd have to say DSotM is better as a whole.

Re: WISH YOU WERE HERE.....10/10

But that's not the point, as they are both excellent concept albums,Whether you see them as one unit or devide them into their parts, they are both great, with a slight advantage to Wish you were here(IMHO).

Re: WISH YOU WERE HERE.....10/10

My point about WYWH is that it is about the music industry, as Bride Of A Bull puts it, biting the hand that feeds them.

NNJ is correct in saying The Wall is an intensely personal piece. But it does contain important messages about the abuse of power and authority, fascism, being tolerant of others, isolation that Joe Public should consider . Comparing racism to disliking someone becasue they have acne is a very powerful analogy.

Apart from the power of friendship and respect, WYWH does not convey a broader message to me.

Cheers

Simon

Re: WISH YOU WERE HERE.....10/10

I guess, your right about that. But still WYWH speaks on a much deeper leve bacause it is, as you put it self-indulgant, it allows us to know the band, and Syd, on a deeper level.

Personally, I think SOYCD has to be the nicest thing Rog's ever written about anyone

Re: WISH YOU WERE HERE.....10/10

There is Nothing Like lying on the bed after a weekend lunch, with SOYCD on your stereo system, mine has a NAD CD Player and two Westra 150 WAT Stereo Hi-Fi Speakers. The feeling is Indescricbeable, and the musical piece is one of the masterpieces of the 20th century.

I think Someone said on this forum they teach it on some musicologic Institute on the UK.

_archer,

It was me and it's true.

I also saw it discussed on the Open University - TV college in the UK.

Floyd on!

I woke up to SOYCD today, I listened to the whole thing while half asleep and didn't get out of bed until it finished.

Today's gonna rock.

Hm. I'm not sure DSotM is such a great *concept* album, but still my "slight advantage" goes elsewhere

Re: WISH YOU WERE HERE.....10/10

Dear Kevin,

It seems to me you do more complaining than giving compliments.
DSOTM, WYWH and the wall are all too commercial for you. You don't like the Final cut, You don't like UMMAGUMMA Studio Album.
Tell Me, Is the Only Pink floyd Album You do like(i.e. that stands with your "Blue blood standards") is Animals?

I'm just Sharing my feelings and asking a question, I do not mean to offend.

Re: WISH YOU WERE HERE.....10/10

Hey, man, you've got me all wrong.

1. I never said anything negative about the Wall.

2. I luuuuurve DSotM, I just think it doesn't stand up to, say, Animals or TFC *as a concept album*. It's still the best Floyd album in my mind

3. WYWH is absolutely amazing. I just said, in reply to "WYWH is the best Floyd album", that imho it's a short step behind DSotM

4. I luuuuuuurve TFC (check out my topic "The Final Cut...worst album???" where my first words are "I'm getting sick of people who say TFC is Floyd's worst album") I don't know where you got the idea I don't like it.

5. I don't like the Ummagumma studio album because it's terrible. That's that.

6. I do think the Wall, DSotM, and WYWH are very *polished*, and a bit of a contrast to their earlier stuff, like Meddle, AHM, ASoS, etc. The only real difference is that Rog wrote all the lyrics and the production is miles better.

I don't mean to complain. There are at least two songs I like from each Floyd album (I say at least two because there are exactly two from the hated Ummagumma studio disc: Grantchester Meadows and The Narrow Way). I just present my opinions...Sorry if I've been putting across the wrong impression, Floydians. _archer, if you want to get the best impression about what I'm like as a Floyd fan, I could tell you in one word: awed, but check out my (shivers) topic to find out what I mean.

Kev
