3 Mar 66: John Lennon was reported in a London newspaper as saying the Beatles were "more popular than Jesus Christ." When the quote was widely reported in North America several months later, some protesters burned their Beatles' records. Lennon later apologized for the remark.

March 3, 1994: Kurt Cobain overdoses in Rome, Italy when he mixes the tranquilizer Rohyphol and champagne. After his suicide in April, Courtney Love would report this as as his first suicide attempt, although this was not what was reported when the overdose occured.

4th March 1948 - Chris Squire, bass player for Yes, is born.

4th March 1963 - Jason Newsted from Metallica is born.

4th March 1966 - John Lennon's statement that The Beatles were 'more popular than Jesus Christ' was published in The London Evening Standard. It resulted in some US states burning Beatles records.

4th March 1967 - "Ruby Tuesday" by the Rolling Stones topped the charts and stayed there for a week.

4th March 1973 - Pink Floyd, promoting their new album, "The Dark Side of the Moon," start a three week tour of the U.S. in Madison, Wisconsin.

4th March 1977 -CBS released The Clash's self-titled first album, CBS in the U.S. refuses to release it until 1979. Americans will buy 100,000 imported copies of "The Clash," making it one of the biggest-selling import records of all time.

4th March 2001 - Village People singer Glenn Hughes died of lung cancer aged 50.

March 4, 1986 -- Richard Manuel, the pianist for the rock group, The Band, was found hanged in the bathroom of his motel room in Winter Park, Florida. The 42-year-old Manuel, originally from Stratford, Ontario, had performed with other members of The Band in Winter Park the previous night.

march 5 1952 - Alan Clark, keyboards, Dire Straits born

march 5 1963 - Country singer Patsy Cline was killed in a plane crash at Dyersburg, Virginia.

march 5 1965 - The Rolling Stones kicked off their fifth UK tour at The Regal Theatre, Edmonton, London. A 14 date package tour with The Hollies, The Konrads and Dave Berry and the Crusiers.

march 5 1971 - Led Zeppelin started a 12 date 'thank you' tour
for British fans appearing the clubs from their early days and charging the admission price from 1968. The first show was at The Ulster Hall, Belfast.

march 5 1973 - the former US manager of Jimi Hendrix, Michael Jeffrey was one of 68 people killed in a plane crash in France.

march 5 1982 - actor and singer John Belushi of The Blues Brothers died from an overdose of cocaine and heroin.

march 5 1992 - R.E.M. cleaned up in The Rolling Stone Music Awards winning, album of the year, for 'Out Of Time', artist of the year, best single for 'Losing My Religion', best video for 'Losing My Religion', best band, best guitarist & best songwriter.

march 5 2002 - the first episode of ‘The Osbournes’ TV show was aired on MTV in the US.

3/5/1999, Sir Elton John won a court case against The Daily Star, after they had published long-lens photographs of Spice Girl Victoria Adams and footballer David Beckham while they were staying at Eltons home.


3/5/2000, it was reported that the former rap artist MC Hammer had become a preacher at the Jubilee Christian Centre in San Jose. Hammer had been declared bankrupt in 1996 after squandering his $50m fortune.


3/5/2000, Madonna went to No.1 on the UK singles chart with her version of the Don McLean Hit 'American Pie'. It was her 50th UK hit and the singers ninth UK No.1.


3/5/2000, Oasis went to No.1 on the UK chart with their fourth album 'Standing On The Shoulders Of Giants.'
