Re: My own little black book

My band is finally starting to write our own tunes (I have a lead guitarist who has recently blown me away with his improvisational skills, and a rhythm guitarist who was recently blown me away with his keyboard skills...Grade XII Conservatory, indeed, heh.) But anyway, we've got a sound that's like a modern version of early Waters-era Floyd (ie. 70-73, thereabouts); it's heavy, but we also have a very lush and full sound, and despite being "heavy" most of our songs are pretty down-tempo, and I do more than just shouting and swearing as seems to be the style for heavy bands... Since our new idea to do the whole "original material" thing, we've cut our covers list down to Gordon Lightfoot's "If You Could Read My Mind" (you've never heard a '70s folk song rock so hard  ), "Comfortably Numb" and Zeppelin's "Heartbreaker"...most of our original stuff came out of those covers, just jamming afterwards in the same key. But, I'm babbling, so I'll try and get to a point sometime. First off, we're searching for a name. We haven't yet come up with something that we've stuck with for more than, oh, three days  . Also, I'm working on a song called "Etiam, Mi Domine". That's Latin for "Yes, My Lord" and it's turning out fairly well...anyone want to see lyrics when it's done? (If not, I understand... )

Percy, just copyright them now, then you can post all you want. Anyone who uses them is held liable for theft of intellectual property. Very cheap to copyright lyrics, by the way.

I'm not interested in seeing them, just thought I'd let you know...and best of luck.

Re: My own little black book

And...another way of ensuring your rights of copyright before actually going to the hassle of getting a lawyer to do the copyright bits for you - I was advised this by my lawyer mate - is to write down your lyrics or record your songs on a tape and post these to yourself recorded delivery so that you must sign for it upon receipt and retain the package unopened. It may be an additional thought to include the front page of a local newspaper to confirm the date.

Apparently, as unlikely as this sounds, this is tantamount to proof of copyright, at least in the British Court.

Go figure.

Floyd on!

Re: My own little black book

Hey, I've got a name for you (my band rejected the idea for us, but don't let that influence you):

Fantasy Chicken Leg Dipped in Cold Battery Acid

Just thank me in the sleeve notes of all your albums.

Re: My own little black book

YOIX.

Thanks 2 all who offered help w/the whole copyright bit. Lyrics may be slow coming, as our *%^#&^%&#%$ drummer just quit (or should I say, had his ass thrown out without anyone letting me in on the decision) , and our songs _usually_ come out of improvs. Sitting down and writing lyrics, I can't see myself doing. Oh well. Nick Mason, he wasn't

Re: My own little black book

Funny you should say that about your drummer. I just read an article that said there is a shortage of drummers. Bands are either going without, or making the second gutarist (as we all know everyone is playing the guitar these days) the drummer.

Recently I saw a show with a band from the Boston area. Each member took turns playing the 3 main instruments, guitar, bass, and drums. At first I thought it was a novelty, but it grew on me by the end of the show.

Re: My own little black book

Interestingly enough, my lead geet-ist is a damn passable drummer in his own right, but I have nowhere near the talent on guitar to fill that void.

Re: My own little black book

Ditto.

And Radiochair, that name - it's soo original, so full of life, and acid...

...i was thinking of naming my band by 2 20's american blues artists, i mean, who the hell does that?

(now using, for your convenience, the anti-sarcasm device....)

Re: My own little black book

Heh, that'd be a great name for a Pink Floyd tribute band - really great.

Better than some of the names I've seen..."Pink Floyd Australia", indeed. *spits*
