Congrats to Dave

I dont know if anyone has seen the new guitar world magazine, but they did top 100 guitar solos...Comfortably Numb and Dave got number 4!! I actually agree with one of these stupid top 100's for once.

Well, I thought the Dave guiter solo on Wish You Were Here was stronger, 58 seconds into the song, he starts playing. That was off the charts.
But yes, good for Dave on #4. Who were the top 3?

Is there any doubt about Stairway to Heaven? That is definitely the greatest guitar solo I've ever heard (sorry Comfortably Numb).

I agree..but the top five of all time is still pretty awesome!

Dave's solo on the Pulse album is the best guitar playing I had ever heard in my life, and I have listened to it all, from the different guitarist like Marty Friedman and Steve Vai to bands such as Deep Purple. It's a fucking long orgasem, I just cannot describe it in any other way. Stairway to heaven doesn't come close IMHO.

Well, I think the PULSE solo is nice, but a little long and a little slow. For me, the coolest Comfy Numb solo can be found on the Wall Live. There's a little more power and forcefulness to it, which may not be a great thing for a song about Rog and elephant tranqs, but really helps with a guitar solo.

Just my opinion tho. Hooray for Dave!

Heh. Best Floyd solo? Listen to Dogs. That, Floydians, is my opinion.

Dogs is one of Dave's best guitar works.

I know that Dave created the Comfortably Numb solo and all, but really In the Flesh 99 had, in my opinion, a much better representation then the PULSE video. With two guitarists the best way I know to describe it is Comfortably Numb meets Dueling Banjos. Each guitarist taking turns on different licks, it gets louder and better till it explodes at the end. If anyone saw this, please back me up here, cause I am sure I will get flamed for giving credit to someone else for Dave's masterpeice.

I was there and can certainly back up what Not Now John is saying. In fact there were 3 solos that stayed in my memory was being fantastic in Roger's In The Flesh set:

The guitar work on Dogs, makes me cry every time I hear it;

Money when each guitarist played a solo in turn, each better than the last. Andy Fairweather Low played like Townsend's windmill and finally Snowy White blew everyone else away;

Comfortably Numb, the best version I have heard, even better than the Wall in Berlin. To me it's better than on Is There Anybody Out There which was my one disappointment from that album. Maybe it wasn't such an anthem at the time.

My personal favorite Floyd guitar work is SOYCD part 8 from the spitting incident concert. This is the Azimuth Coordinator 2 RoIO from July 6, 1977. 15 minutes of Dave blasting out, as if he knoew this would be the last concert in which he would be able to do so. Go listen to it if you can, its really unbelieveable.

Long and slow is Dave's style. That's what I like about it, every note extends and echoes. He makes the guitar cry. Take High Hopes for example, or Sorrow.
I think the ITAOT version is too harsh and empty. But the singing is much better in ITAOT, he put more emotion to it there. There's also the contrast between Dave's voice and Roger's. If only I could mix the two together... :smile:

And btw, the (supposedly) elusive DSoT video has an excellent Comfy Numb solo. Slow and repetitive, but I still like it. :smile:

Talking about lists, VH1 put Dark Side at #51 on the all time best 100 rock albums. The way overrated Beatles have like 4 of theirs in the top ten. These lists are terrible, putting Stevie Wonder well above Aretha Franklin (that's a fucking shame) and Tommy is only #90 but AC/DC Back in Black is #82. I am convinced only retards spend time making these lists.
