Re: Pink Floyd Fan Music Recommendations

Even though I am the one who railed off about other-band posts, I'll offer my suggestions

RW - Amused to Death

Tool - Opiate if you're already into Tool and don't have it, Ænima and Lateralus if you haven't heard them before

The Doors - Anything *except* the "Soft Parade" album

Zeppelin - Anything except "Presence"

Beatles, after Lennon discovered the marvelousness of LSD.

Tangerine Dream

Debussy's "La Mer"

Orff's "Carmina Burana"

Anything by B.B. King, Willie Dixon, Muddy Waters, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Chuck Berry, Eric Clapton, and all those cool guys.

Re: Pink Floyd Fan Music Recommendations

Don't worry Not Now John, I have a few of Weird Al's albums. I always feel somewhat embarrased by them though. My low self esteem.

Fixx, why did you select post-bends era Radiohead? The Bends, I thought, was an incredible album. Bulletproof... I Wish I Was is one of the most entrancing songs I've ever heard.

Re: Pink Floyd Fan Music Recommendations

well, here are some of my faves,(besides pink floyd):

Genesis(1967-1980 era), one of the best Progressive rock bands IMHO, Great keyboards and fine guitars and bass.

The Who- Live at Leeds(1970) 25th anniversary remastered & Extended edition is awsome!
Plus Tommy is a knockout as well.

Jethro Tull - with albums like Aqualung,
Thick as a brick,Songs from the wood,
Stand up,Benefit and others this is another one of the greatest of progressive rock. and they still give awsome Live performance till today(I saw them on 2000).

Porcupine Tree - In their album "The sky Moves sideways" from 1995, they combine the style of the album "Wish you were here" and all of the styles created since, creating a beautiful album.

The Beatles - Still one of the important bands in rock history. very influential.

King Crimson - their 1st album from 1969 - "In the court of the Crimson King" is the best Debut album of a band ever recorded
and is one of the most influential albums ever.their 2nd -4th album were good too, although they didn't Measure up to the standards of the first album.

Dire Staits - one of the best bands of the late 70's and the 80's, featuring the great abilities of Lead Guitarist/Vocalist Mark Knofler.

Led Zeppelin - their 2nd and 4th albums are their bests, with songs like Stairway to heaven,Misty mountain Hop,Black Dog,Whole Lotta Love,Living Loving(She's just a woman),etc.

Cream - with Songs like "Sunshine Of you Love", "Badge","Crossroads" and a guitarist like eric Clapton, this Supergroup is a Treat...

And as for YES, I know I like their "Close to the Edge" Suite.

Bron-Yr-Aur Stomp. Man, I've been trying to learn that on guitar for two years now. Maybe I'll do it someday...

IV (Led Zeppelin) is a great album. Stairway to Heaven an incredible song (I'm learning it on keyboard, but the transcription I have doesn't include the solo).

It goes without saying that we all love Zepplin, but _archer reminded me of Dire Straits and another I can't forget is a band none of you have probably ever heard of called Emily's Toybox. I'm sure that I will remember others as time goes on.

See, told you I would remember another...Blues great, child prodigy etc, Kenny Wayne Sheppard. Ironically, it was a GAP comercial that turned me onto him.

The solo's for guitar, man, but if it's any help, the chords are just C-G-Fmaj7, if memory serves

Re: Pink Floyd Fan Music Recommendations

I know the solo is for guitar, it has the song transcribed for piano though.

Another CD I purchased and enjoyed is Wingspan, by (you guessed it!) Wings. It's a great compilation and is a good place to start if you've heard nothing else of Paul McCartney's stuff with Wings. Live and Let Die is such an amazing song.

Re: Pink Floyd Fan Music Recommendations

Live and Let Die is a great song, but otherwise, bleccch on Wings.

That reminds me of Guns N Roses, November Rain is, without a doubt, one of my all-time favorite songs.

Re: Pink Floyd Fan Music Recommendations

Appetite For Destruction STILL rocks, even after all these years. Coldcut's Let Us Play is also really fecking brilliant. Big shout out for The Flash Gordon OST by Queen, also.

And, no, I'm not ashamed.

Cheers,

Mark
