| Re: Pink Floyd Fan Music Recommendations NNJ - I haven't heard the WYWH cover... It's on the new album right? I've put off buying it due to lack of funds... however I was a little apprehensive about hearing it cuz I wasn't sure if Wyclef's style would mesh with Floyd... but then, Wyclef has a rather very talented way of blending all types of music into one energy-filled album, I think. Glad to hear it's decent.

| Re: Pink Floyd Fan Music Recommendations hahahaha. guess i stepped on some toes. i hope y'all know that it's all good. i respect everyone's musical taste. i'm not one to not listen to a piece of music and dismiss it before even hearing it because i may have some preconceived prejudice . hell, i certainly don't think of myself as a critic. and if any of you out there think that you have unapproachable taste, please...stop the madness and look at yourself in the mirror. i'm sure a good portion of us grew up during the '80s. hahahahah and no, The Smiths (and a few other exceptions obviously...Echo and the Bunnymen come to mind) do not make up for a decade of crappy music. hahahhahaand don't get me wrong...everytime i listen to Rush on the radio, i'm amazed that they were just a three-piece band. but damn, dude...i just can't dig what they're singing about or how they put it all together. and i know i'll get a lot of shite for this, but the vocals scrape my ears like sandpaper against roseanne barr's soul. *shrug* i made the comparison between Rush and Cream because both were sort of all-star superbands. and i don't see why we can't compare a, say, Eric Clapton to and Eddie Van Halen. why not? that seems to me to be pigeonholing our own view of the world, and the musicians themselves. (btw, i'd take EC's sincerity which i hear in his playing over the virtuosity of EVH...although VH was a great band (yes, i mean WAS...the dude from eXtreme? are you friggin' kidding me? hahahahha)and i really enjoy their music. i think that the Robbie Krieger legacy is such a tragic one. he was up there with all the other great guitarists during the late '60s, in my estimation. his work on "peace frog" is fantastic. "riders on the storm," "not to touch the earth," and so on. this guy was amazing. he's such an underrated guitarist. all because he looked like a malnourished hillbilly...kinda like how the kid from "Gentle Ben" turned out. hahahahha. poor robbie. and don't player-hate on JM. he may have been a bit goofy, a lot pretentious, must've gotten women that you can't even FANTASIZE about being with, but the dude wrote some cool lyrics (except for "the west is the best," "i'm the lizard king, i can do anything" sorta crap). and why are all of you dogging on his singing? i think he had a beautiful voice. i mean, y'all make him sound like he's Bob Dylan. hardly the case. madcap, i love Abbey Road too! *high five* hahahhahaha. i don't know why that would evoke a sarcastic response from me. do you feel guilty that you like a Beatles album? strange thing, you wrote. hahahha i'd like to point out that all of these people were and are...well, PEOPLE, aren't they? they were all just guys who wanted to get together, play some music, get women, experiment with drugs, whatever. when you get into terms like "respect for music" and whatnot, you're making Assumptionville your hometown. c'mon...i loved Pink Floyd as i'm sure y'all do, but c'mon...they were just guys. if anything, their background hardly comes from a Somerset Maugham novel...they weren't hardly working class boys from the rough side of manchester, were they? and roger waters...he was a fantastic lyricist and a very charismatic singer. but his bassplaying (except for a few bright spots) was questionable, and from what i've read, the dude was an asshole. how in the hell do you tell a friend from college, who was there from the beginning, to piss off? sorry, but Roger's wacked. his recent interview with NEMS just proved to me what a pompous human being he is. it's quite late here, and to quote Kenny from the cinematic classic (otherwise known as Half-Baked), my weed is wearing off. good night to all, and have fun! |

| Re: Pink Floyd Fan Music Recommendations "You wanna know something else,,,, Morisson used music as a medium to get sex and drugs. That's an insult to all four members of Floyd and all other people who actually have respect for music." just one more thing. i just closed my eyes and thought about what it'd be like if i was a rock star. the first thing i saw was...well, women and drugs...hahahhahaha. does that make me immoral as well? madcap, if you'd be a rock star that would never use your music to get chicks and get high, well, you're a beautiful person. like i said before, shine on you crazy pearl (jam). hahhahaha. |

| Re: Pink Floyd Fan Music Recommendations Yes - very lengthy and interesting post. I'd like to add David Bruebeck to my list - great Jazz artist. And guys (or gals) - let's not get this out of hand.

| Re: Pink Floyd Fan Music Recommendations Brubeck was not only a great jazz artist, he was a cool dude. i had the fortune of meeting him out in Newport Beach a couple of years back. a real sweet guy. and i'm not sure if you knew this, but he was one of the first dudes to have a racially desegregated band. in the jazz series by ken burns, brubeck tells a story of the first "negro" that he met along the Sacramento River in California. he was with his dad, who asked the black man to take off his shirt. the man had been branded years before. when he told this story, brubeck began to get all choked up, recalling how his father looked at him and told him: "these things can't happen." a very touching story indeed. i am down with DB. no doubt. yes, yes, i will keep my posts shorter. hahahhah. have a good day, y'all. |

| Re: Pink Floyd Fan Music Recommendations Morrison used music as a way to get sex and drugs? Yikes. Jim was a poet first, the music was secondary. He was your classic "I hate rock stardom" kinda guy, a '60s Kurt Cobain.

| Re: Pink Floyd Fan Music Recommendations Nay, Percy. I disagree. Morrison was a poet first, his songs first appeared as poetry, that's true. But he did also use Rock n Roll to further his own excesses. I'd say 99% of past and present rock stars got into music for one of three things, sex, money, or fame. This includes Floyd (are we forgetting the whole Syd story here?). Money, or love, is the inspiration for many artists, musical or not, and for us to condemn someone for their pursuit of such things is just ludicrous. I mean why do you flip burgers or wash cars or whatever it is you do? To get money, and hopefully a girl. Drugs are just a by-product of the money, if that is your thing. Then again comic books could be your thing. Either way, money is what makes the world go around.

| Re: Pink Floyd Fan Music Recommendations Of course, we all aspire about doing something great, 'rock stardom' included - with the many benefits etc... and no doubt Floyd was in on all this. I wonder - "Money" seems to be a sarcastic look at the lust-filled minds that when they get the money also seem to go mad (a piece of the dark side of lunatics, well at least in Syd's case). And i'm no way saying here that the Floyd was (is?) a 'perfect' band - that they were solely in it for the love of music (which i'm sure was true aswell) -or that they were only in a band to have fun and show the display concepts to their fans (which is also true, but not wholely their purpose). But what i'm saying is that, to me, the Floyd has, in a way looked past their lust - Roger has realized that hey, sure money is a benefit - but he really loves writing music, and he really likes to expand his thoughts - hell he didn't make a cent on the wall tour - but i think the joy he gets inside from doing some outrageous and beautiful (yes, the wall is beautiful) things. The band as a whole sort of started this when they had seen someone who had fallen from stardom due to their lack of sense of future. Syd, i think in that way is the best thing that has happened (and not happened) to the Floyd. He set up a nice foundation, and if not for the foundation - the band would have fallen apart when he was abandoned. But they moved on, and realized Syd's wrongs - destined to be, maybe not better musicians, or writers - but to write with more of a purpose - to compose and be succesful so they can have a sense of success. Not to be succesfull in order to splurge, but to build up their confidence, and even after the 'breakup', they still have this knowledge. So, sure Floyd was in it for the above mentioned in NNJ's post. But they've evolved, and i think that's what sets them apart from so many - as an one of their own fell, it in turn strengthened them. Notice aswell, how dark they seemed to be during concerts in the 'middle years', almost as though they were on stage for a very different purpose than the outright bands who screamed and shouted and got drunk with the rest of the audience. Floyd seems so much more classical to me, they give me a sense of reasurance in their difference and indifference. Just another reason why The Pink Floyd is beautiful.

| Re: Pink Floyd Fan Music Recommendations Cooper, does mocking me make you feel superior? I realized I kinda contradicted my pink floyd fandom when i said the "used music for sex and drugs" rubbish. But think about, Syd got kicked out for drug use affecting their shows. So technically they were a drug free band after '68. Well, unless you consider cigs a problem. (WYWH, cough by dave)

| Re: Pink Floyd Fan Music Recommendations Okay- enough with the inferiority complex jibes. The man's just finding his feet amongst our rather defined and haughty views (well, mine certainly, anyway). We all have a common interest- let's not forget that.
