Good distortion pedal

No problem.

I have a Big Muff USA and I'm not happy with it. It's running through a Marshal Valvestate amp. It's very noisy and the sound is not clean at all, only if I set the tone almost at zero it gets smooth enough but then it becomes too thin.

Am I using it wrong??

oh, and while we're on the subject, I have EMG DG-20 and whenver I strike two strings at the same time while using distortion or overdrive I get a lot of noise. Is this normal??

I'm not sure, but isn't the whole point of using a disortion pedal NOT to get a clean sound? :P
In my eyes/ears a Marshall wont give you the Floyd-sound, if it's that your'e after. Remember, a clean sound is essential before you put on any effects.

About that other thing. The same thing happens to me, when I have a lot of gain on my JH-1. But I have stock pickups...

You know what I do for tons of distortion and feedback? I turn my DS-1 and my Tubescreamer to full gain and volume, and I turn them both on. If I stop playing at all it just goes to glorious feedback, but when I am playing something it almost sounds clean. You can hear every inch of every note, it's awesome.

Not clean = I'm getting additional artifacts other than the original signal. It just sounds bad. I've tried other distortion and overdrive pedals and it never sounded like this. Could it be defective?

So that means it suck? Because the latest metallica album sucked bigtime.

I've sinced changed my mind about the Boss DS-1; it's not a bad distortion, if you've got it loud. I've sinced set mine like Kurt Cobain did his (level: all the way up; tone: set around 11 o'clock, distortion: all the way up), and it sounds pretty good. Only, it's prone to major feedback, but that's what the on/off switch is for.

Example of good DS-1 usage: Nirvana's Bleach album.

I used to use a Boss SD-1 pedal which gives a good warm overdrive. Lately I've been playing around with a Dunlop Fuzz Face. It's a recent release where they worked out a few bugs and it actually sounds more like the original. Definately a good pedal if you want to play with a Jimi Hendrix type fuzz sound. I like it, anyway. The only catch is that I only have a solid state practice amp with an 8" speaker, which sounds decent at a certain volume range, but otherwise I think it loses a little of the sound. That's regardless of what's on my pedal board. This summer I'd like to get a real amp. I've been thinking about a few different tube amps. I keep wanting to try a Fender '65 Twin Reverb, but I'm not sure why. I haven't really gone out and tried anything yet. Metal is definately not my thing. I'm going after more of a bluesy rock sound. Any amp recommendations?
