Song interpretations

I'm looking for interpretations of floyd songs. But for the purposes of this post, if anyone can give me an interpretation of echoes i'd appreciate it.

Re: Song interpretations

careful now... we (humans) have a tendency to interpret things to ruins... besides, what good is another person interpretation good for? it's usually a very subjective and personal "feeling" of the song (or film, or picture, or poem, etc, etc)....

Re: Song interpretations

I agree with the above post, its often a very personal thing. I did see a book however that explains the meanings, according to the members of Floyd. I don't think it has every single song, but it had most of them and certainly all of the big ones.

Re: Song interpretations

I don't think that it is always possible to interprate Floyd songs (and most music) in the traditional way i.e. it has a deffinate meaning. It can just envoke a feeling or emotion that is as strong as any idea that could be put across and will change from listener to listener.

Re: Song interpretations

Another Brick in the Wall - by Cliff Jones is pretty good about explaining the songs and the stories behind them. Although there are some errors in it.

But as noted, the 'meaning' of songs is mostly personal interpretation.

Smile Great cover versions

Check out the "Dub side of the moon" album with great dub reggae version of the whole album, the "Saucerful of Secrets" sampler with rather alternative/industrial versions of "Echoes", "Set the Control" etc. by Alien Sex Fiend, Psychic TV, Chrome etc., and the numerous bootlegged ambient/trance techno remixes of all album (including some great reworkings of "If" and other tracks by The Orb).

Re: Song interpretations

There's a book called "Which Ones Pink". It's a good read but again these are the authors interpertations of the meanings of the songs, album covers, and music.

I enjoyed the book thoroughly. He also does an interview with Roger in the book and asks him his interpetations.

Re: Song interpretations

Judging from songs like Echoes, Wish You Were Here(And SOYCD's), Time, Vera, Your Possible Pasts, etc. it seems as though Roger has possibly has had chronophobic/metathesiophobic tendencies.

Re: Song interpretations

The book called "Echoes" is invaluable if you're after a starting point for song interpretations. Some of the links to proposes are tenuous, but it's a good launchpad.

Re: Song interpretations

There's an excellent site that has lyrics for many songs, along with members of the site's opinions/thoughts on the song. It can be very enlightening at times.

BTW...isn't there another "echoes interpertation" thread going around?
