Re: Did the Band need roger waters

Did they need Roger????? What Kind of a question is that???? You ask as if he was a commodity and the others used to buy him when they needed him...

Dude... he was a part of a great band... Everyone else needed him as much as he needed everyone else...

Re: Did the Band need roger waters

Waters WAS Floyd from the time when Barrett left through The Final Cut. He provided the bulk of the songwriting, with Gilmour and Wright relegated to provifing the occasional track here and there, and co-writing with Gilmour on occasion. Gilmour provided plenty of those guitar riffs we know and love, and Wright did well with keyboard melodies, but Waters did the bulk of the songwriting and virtually all of the lyrics.

He wrote the melodies...And many great Floyd songs are credited only to Roger (Pigs TDO, Pigs on the Wing, Money, Set the Controls, etc.)

Well as an example if you have the "The making of Darkside of the Moon DVD" most of the ideas were his. And from what I understand alot of the music was first played by him, strummed on an acoustic, on the demos. He would make up the demo with the music, melody, and lyrics and present it to the band.

I have whole bootleg demos of "The Wall" and stuff from "Darkside" and it's Roger playing the guitar parts and doing the vocals. I imagine then he would get the rest of the bands input at that point and have them clean things up and so on.

So yes alot the ideas were his in every facet of the song. I am not trying to slight the other musicians, I love Dave and Rick, it's just that Roger was the driving force behind the creation of their music.

Yeah, but would the music be as good? I think that Dave, Rick and Nicks work is a as important as Waters, but that i wouldnt have worked without Waters. The point is that waters aint any good on the instruments..

I wouldn't go so far as to say that. Roger wasn't a bad bass player at all.

Re: Did the Band need roger waters

I think the POINT is that without one of Dave, Nick, or Rick, the music would have been lessened to some degree, probably to the biggest degree if Dave was missing, then Rick, finally Nick IMO.

But without ROGER most of those Pink Floyd songs we know and love wouldn't exist!

Re: Did the Band need roger waters

How true, how true...

Roger Played a big part of the band... and as everyone else did... but the thread is subjected as to whether or not the band needed waters... now now... thats a bit too gawky there.

Bottom line:

Roger, Nick, Dave, Rick = Pink Floyd... People with doubs... install this line in your head...

Cheers!!!

Arguing about who contributed what to what was essentially a synergistic enterprise is a waste, period. FACT.

He wrote the best ones...

And the vast majority of all of them while he was with the band, post-Barrett...
