Bad lyrics makes for a boring band.

And Waters wrote plenty of the music as well, I'm sure.

Re: Did the Band need roger waters

Waters did not write ALL of the lyrics and certainly other memebers, particulary DG contributed immensely to the sound. BUT, what Waters brought to the table was the concepts and themes. It is great to say DG wrote a few lyrics of The Wall - but there was NO WALL without Waters. He created the concepts, the ideas for the albums. Take that away and there is lttle left.

Clearly though, the sum was greater than the parts when it comes to DG and RW. Both are on their own were simply no where near what they were together. Similar to Lennon/McCartney. They rarely wrote together, even in the early Beatle days but they had a great gift of adding to one another's songs - Lennon being a bit more edgy and McCartney being more melodic.

RW and DG had a great balancing effect on one another. RW on his own seems to focus too much on the lyrics, DG weaker on the lyrics but great musically speaking.

Re: Did the Band need roger waters

One of the main problems with the post Waters albums - especially AMLOR - is their lack of a unifying theme, Waters' specialty.

Ahh, you are aging my dear chimp. First comes the anger of the repeated threads, then comes the forlornness, and then acceptance.

So you have a problem also with Meddle, Piper, Atom Heart Mother, and several other albums I assume.

No. Why would I? Waters was present for all of those except Piper, which Syd Barrett wrote.

Re: Did the Band need roger waters

You would, because of their "lack of a unifying theme", exactly like AMLOR.

What??? I don't understand how can one ask such a question. My answer is yes. I'm not going to rate his size/importance - can you rate your left ear 1 to 10?

I think Meddle and Atom Heart Mother each have much more of a theme than AMLOR. They each flow much better, and are a better group of songs generally.

You can prefer those albums in terms of lyrics, music, flow or whatever you want obviously but look, as a matter of fact they definitely don't have any theme at all.
