| So there I was, walking home from the local gas station with a bottle of beer in each hand, with a pal. We noticed two guys pass us by and we just kept on walking. They suddenly whip around, and I noticed the glint of a blade as the taller guy snarled "Out with the money you ****s, if you know what's good for ya!" We both froze for a minute and here is where everything became sloooowmooooo..... I began stammering and babbling... speaking gibberish of Hindi/Tamil and broken English. And slowly inched back... The dude tried walking forward forcefully to show his intent of getting the goods and the cash from me. The other guy meanwhile was keeping an eye on my friend and seemed quite nervous and fidgety. I suddenly froze, let my eyes go wide, and looked around his head ... as if I saw someone. Both those guys saw what I did and turned around to look. Mistake. I raised my arm and swiftly brought the bottle crashing down on his wrist... breaking the bottle (and a bone or two I fervently hoped). The guy screamed and went down and I let a well placed kick hit his face as he did so before diving on him. My buddy recovered his wits enough to tackle the other guy but he was too strong for him. He managed to squirm free and make a run for it. My buddy got up to run after him but realised he'd be better of helping me. I was numb for a sec but the guy seemed to be in real bad pain, rolling around a lot and screaming. I took a look at his arm and noticed that it seemed badly cut up. There was heavy bleeding. I took of my Tshirt, wrapped it arounda bit tight and elevated his arm (while sitting on him so he doesn't get ideas). My pal took out his cell phone and called for help and there were there within a minute. An ambulance came by in 3 minutes and the guy was loaded onto it. The two officers took us to the gas station again and while they were nice enough to offer us coffee, I refused... finding more comfort in my cigarettes. Took our statements and descriptions of the other guy and then dropped us home (it's freaky sitting in the back seat of a cop car I can tell ya!) I'm still shivering a bit and have no idea what prompted me to do what I just did (that blade looked a foot long!). All those calm moments during leisure time when I told myself that if ever I got held, I would let him take everything and that it wasn't worth fighting for a few bucks seemed to have flown out the window. PHEW!

| Re: What a night! Congratulations, you have bigger f*cking balls than I do! Sometimes people don't think in situations like that, they just react. Anything you tell yourself can go out the window once you get in a situation.

| Re: What a night! You were lucky that you succeeded in that moment, Simon. A friend of a friend of mine (let's call him Frank) is a black belt in karate, and has mastered Judo. He was walking back to his house after his girlfriend broke up with him, walking down Nebraska Av. here in Tampa at midnight - not a smart idea. A man with a baseball bat approaches him. 'Give me all your money, motherf*cker!' the guy says to him. Frank replies, 'Just leave me alone, dude, I'm not looking for trouble.' The man swings his bat up, and then Frank blacked out. When he came to, he had a cut on his forehead, and he had beat the man who tried to rob him totally senseless - Frank's hands were covered in blood. There was two cop cars and an ambulance there at the scene as well. 'Well, it was self-defense,' a cop said. 'We'll just take this man to the hospital and let you go.' The cop gave Frank a ride home. Thanking the cop, Frank walks into his house, covered in blood. 'I wonder how much money this guy would have beat my ass for,' he wonders aloud. He opens his wallet. There's three dollars in it. Hence, the story of the Three-Dollar Ass Beating. |

| Re: What a night! I'm a police officer myself. I like hearing stories of citizens standing up for themselves (although sometimes...It can backfire.) If more people would stand up for themselves there might be less violent crime (however, property crimes would most likely increase to compensate for the lost income from robberies.) Good job Simon!

| Re: What a night! That's huge Simon. Good job. The most important thing is that you weren't hurt. I've no idea how I would have reacted. I did win my last fight though.... by at least 100 metres.

| Re: What a night! Guys! Guys! When my friends got mugged, I sympathised and agreed that I would have done the same thing they did (hand them the money and whatever they ask for). After all, I reasoned it to myself, that getting into life-threatening situations aren't worth it for a few bucks. The stuff in my wallet is insured anyway... But when it DID happen to me, I have NO idea why I did what I just did. It wasn't like I planned it out or anything. I felt nothing, no pain, no fear, no anger. Nothing. It was like I was on full-auto mode or something. I didn't have much on me. No cash and just three credit cards that would have been blocked within 5 minutes of me reaching home and my cell phone, which would have been replaced free of charge. The only thing I lost was $2.50 worth of beer. Weird. Riv : I had a cop on another board tell me the EXACT same thing. It was one ****ing weird night for sure.

| Re: What a night! Glad to hear that you're OK Simon. I have been mugged twice (in Chicago). The first time I just caved and they got everything, not only my money, but my pride and dignity as well. The second time, I fought back. I got a pretty nasty cut on my left arm, but he ended up with a broken knee, a dislocated shoulder and a concussion... I was pissed. Guess I took out on him what I felt from the first time. Anyway, glad your OK.
