For those who liked Dave's solo work and TDB...

Is A Momentary Lapse of Reason really worth it or is it just a bunch of tin-can 80's techno drums and buzzy 'chainsaw' guitars like some of the songs on About Face?

I really like his first solo album, half of About Face(Not the technoey or pop songs), and TDB is one of my favorite albums these days. I wouldn't want to waste money for my next album if it doesn't live up to the above-mentioned albums. Where would you rate it among those three albums?

AMLOR is pretty 80's. The drums are drenched in reverb, as are the guitars. I don't really dig it. Dave plays way too many guitar solos, and sadly, the solos are far less tasteful than other Floyd solos. I haven't heard TDB or his solo stuff so I can't compare them, but I really don't like it.

Re: For those who liked Dave's solo work and TDB...

AMLOR is very 80's.... has some good tracks on there (ie Sorrow, Yet Another Movie/Round and Around, .... maybe a couple other good ones) but TDB is way far more superior IMHO.

I hate to sound like I'm promoting, but if you honestly want to hear, in short, what the album sounds like, and don't mind downloading a large file, go here: http://mystica.cx/~theunabeefer/pf/Nutshell/ and grab my AMLOR mix......... or for easier, less coherent sound bytes, go to Amazon and listen to their small clips.

but yes... very 80's.

Alas, the 80's ruined even the best artists, eh?

TDB is superior, granted, but I think you're going to like AMLOR. It is way, way better than About Face - and that would be easy, but it's also better than DG.

depends what you consider as a waste of money..
if costs 50$, i wouldn't experiment with that

anyway, i think you will like some of the songs, but as everybody said, Bell is much more better ("much more" listen to me...)

Go ahead and buy it. You can always grab a copy cheap off Ebay.

I have an emotional attachment to AMLOR, so perhaps my judgement is skewed, but I love it.

So do I. And i really love the live solos from that album. Loads of long killer solos, great, and almost never heard by the majority.

Yes.

I think most Gilmour fans will find stuff on there they love.

Yeah, he's right. Get AMLoR eventually, but get everything else first. It's not that good (as you can tell by my "Which Album is Worse" thread), but then again, it is Floyd. If you are a completist like I am, you'll get it. Just make sure you get everything else first.

Yes, it sure did. I still maintain that the 80s were a cultural dark age, devastating to music (though there were the occassional exceptions). Just look what it did to The Who, Jethro Tull, Genesis, Yes...the greats!

...although, on a side note, I pinpointed exactly when Santana began to suck arse: 1977, in between Amigos and Inner Secrets. (yes, I actually sat and listened to all the albums in chronological order JUST to figure this out...)

Re: For those who liked Dave's solo work and TDB...

It's certainly not as good as TDB for me, and is in the lower echelon of Floyd albums, but i'll always like it for Terminal Frost.

Also On the Turning Away and the intro to Sorrow. Go for it I say.

Re: For those who liked Dave's solo work and TDB...

If you are a Gilmour fan AMOLR is a must hence why it is one of my top Floyd albums But certainly for me first time round I thought it was rubbish I had only just got into Floyd and it was the first album I listened to after DSOTM and I was expecting more of the same, the strange 80's sounds that it consists of put me right off. So I left it to rot that is until I started playing the guitar and started listening all the Gilmour material I could get my hands on, not expecting much I put it back on and was blown away. Yes there is one dire track and it does seem a little over produced but that doesn't hide the quality of the music an essential purchase.

It's a bit of a commonplace, actually some wonderful music has been released in the 80s, from great artists like Tom Waits, Peter Gabriel, Queen, U2, Dire Straits and many others.
