SRV is damn good. I learned how to play guitar by learning all of "Texas Flood" and "In Step". Then along comes that John Mayer kid and steals my story!

Here's a slightly different angle on this (given that people are arguing for Jimmy Page).

Which is better?

Stairway to Heaven solo or Comfortably Numb solos (the middle one AND the outro)?

And what about Knopfler's rambling solos on Tunnel of Love and Telegraph Road?

Which are the better crafted solos in your opinion?

In my opinion Page played the best solo on Achilles Last Stand, not Stairway To Heaven. I think you can't really compare Page and Gilmour, they have a too differnet style... Page is the best guitarist of those three, but overall I like Knopfler the most, because he is the best songwriter out of those three and a good singer. Gilmour has the best singing voice though. Just my 2 cents.

Page at his greatest in my opinion was Dazed and Confused from The Song Remains the Same. The guitar solo and that middle part are the most amazing things I've heard Page do

Re: Dave Is The Greatest Guitarist In The World

This question depends highly on each individual as what he thinks of the word 'Best Guitarist' as...

For some its real fast playing that turns them on... for which I think there are much faster guitar playing gurus...

But for me... what david plays... the way he weaves a solo out so attractively... so very smooth that it almost kills you... really... if im in the mood and im listening to David's solo's i can go mad...

In my opinion Dave is the best guitarist... for sure...

There's also one more thing... this thread is welcome in this site for sure... but you post this in say a Mettalica forum (if there is something like that anywhere' then you're bound to have a lot of disagreeing customers...

But yes... almost anyone who listens to Pink Floyd (seriously) puts Dave on their top 3 greatest guitarist league.

The Bottom line is... that Dave in my opinion is the best guitarist.

Hail.

SRV also put forth a good show sometimes... but I somehow tend to get switched off at times....

Re: Dave Is The Greatest Guitarist In The World

While I cannot comment on the technical aspects of Dave's guitar playing, I can comment on what I like. In my opinion and although it subjective, I think he's the best. Perhaps it's style or a combination of both style and ability. The package suits me to a tee.

Re: Dave Is The Greatest Guitarist In The World

Gilmour and Knopfler are the guitarists I like best.
But, I must admit, my opinion is highly influenced by the great music they played. For example, I don't like Santana simply because I don't like his songs.
It's my fault.

Re: Dave Is The Greatest Guitarist In The World

Have you ever heard of Phil Palmer? He even made some great solos on some Lucio Battisti (an Italian singer, in the 80s) songs.
I know he's one of the most prized (and well-paid) sessionist.

Re: Dave Is The Greatest Guitarist In The World

It is hard to determine who the greatest guitarist in the world is because good guitarist arent always the most known one.s I saw a guy in a bar play a guitar that made Jimmy Paige look like a begginer. But David Gilmour and Mark Knoplfer are great at playing a guitar
