Re: Division Bell

I must admit that TDB is one of the most-played Floyd CDs in my stereo.
I have a fortune (or un-fortune) to find this album beautiful esp. High Hopes, WDYWFM and Keep Talkin...
You see I'm not a purist. Besides, Dave's About Face is great.

(Off-Topic)
Joker Wild, is it a Gilmour song with "Who gives a ****" lyrics? Just curious.

Re: Division Bell

Da_Floyd_Fan,

That was Mr. Gilmour's reply when asked at the recent Meltdown concert when the next Pink Floyd album was coming out. It was said in a rather playful tone, so it probably shouldn't be taken seriously as an indication of whether or not there will be a new album! I'll be waiting for October 15th!

Re: Division Bell

Supposedly, there is to be an announcement in the MOJO magazine coming out on that date, which will say something about PF's future from this point.

Re: Division Bell

People, I've changed me mind! Now i LOVE Wearing The Inside Out. Now I think it's absolutely super! I've given it a few more listens, and now I can't stop singing it. Now I think it's a great song.

See ya!

Re: Division Bell

I don't know why but I absolutely can't stand "A Great Day For Freedom". I love the guitar on High Hopes and I think "Inside Out" is a smashing song. On the whole, I'd give it a pass but for these two songs!!

Re: Division Bell

ahh. DB is what I call, a teenage hooked album, Its good and all, but far from WYWH or Animals, musically. Its really hard to follow albums of Pink Floyd sound that do no contain some kind of theme. The Wall, was like ONE project that related to each other from song to song, just like Animals, the sounds differed yet mirrored each other.

Cluster One - is a great instrumental. Simple yet great. Nothing like Echoes, although after hearing Echoes for at least 500 times, it kinda fades on you, Cluster is not as addictive.

WDYWFM - this song has like, went all the way over the top to reach for the "pop" taste. It's just not that progressive sound I was used to. Its like a new band did this song. Good job, you idiots.

Poles Apart - agree that it had a Wall turn to it. Maybe thats what they were aiming at. Althought, to me, its as if, Gilmour is speaking to someone, I always, always think its like a 'one sided dialogue' between Gilmour and Waters.

"did you know.. it was all going to go, so wrong for you"

"hey you..did you ever realize what you'd become" - notice the 'hey you'

just read the lyrics.

Marroned - great track indeed, slightly repetative, shoulda have put all of it on the Echoes CD

AGDFF - disliked, lyrics were good, delivery wasn't as good.

Wearing The Inside Out - is an addiction that disguises itself in many forms. and it will influence you one way or another. the backing vocals added suspence to it.

after the cd falls of to a basicly pop ish style again until the bells start on High Hopes, far from superb, but a great finisher.

when I say pop ish, I mean tracks like Lost For Words/Take It Back, its just NOT THE SAME. Where DID THE SOUND FROM 'Dark Side and
WYWH GO?? Come BACK!!

My little review.

Re: Division Bell

i think the album is kind of an unmemorable entry into the pink floyd library. most of the songs sound the same, kinda slow and airy, and wrights keyboard playing is very simple and unimaginative when compared with his older work (such as anything ummagumma to animals). i also agree with madcap that all of gilmours solos sound the same. and they are all very predictable, you know exactly where they will start before you even hear them. the only two standouts to me are 'poles apart' and 'keep talking'. they show a tiny bit of that old pf creativity.

it also bothers me that there are other people writing pink floyd lyrics. its not special anymore. if wright cant write his own lyrics, why bother making that song? so he could make a kenny g sound alike?

all in all, i like the theme of the album, its still better than 85% of the shit out there these days, but this is VERY VERY far from the pink floyd we all love so much. if only gilmour could do guitars like on animals and wright some of his dsotm magic it coulda been great. oh well.

oh yeah, and waaaaay too many backup singers. it fit on dsotm and wywh. here they are just trying too hard.

Re: Division Bell

I agree in that department, I've never been fond of the generous use of backup singers. Of course, Roger's recent works have been filled with them, especially Amused to Death, but seeing as how he sounded like a fuckin 80 year old with throat cancer on that record, maybe it wasnt a bad idea. To his credit, he sounds MUCH better now than he did 10 years ago, much like Robert Plant had the same problem.

Re: Division Bell

Sheesh...so much to comment on in this thread!!! I guess I'll throw my two bobs worth in though.

Firstly I agree that a lot of Gilmour's stuff we've heard before, especially the solo at the start of WDYWFM...which is (as someone has already said) very similar if not the same to one of his songs off David Gilmour. It is also worth noting that part of the chord progression on High Hopes is the same as Welcome to The Machine.

A lot of people have said that it is nothing like the old PF, but I don't think it was meant to be. In fact I think that was the idea behind the title. Division Bell is a bell in parliament that calls people to make a decision...so I presume this was them saying "this is what we want to play these days, if you don't like it piss off".

As for my own opinion on the album, I need to be in a very quite mood to play it. That said, I really enjoy listening to it when I am in one of those moods. Lost for Words is the only song on the album that does ABSOLUTELY NOTHING for me.

I could say lots more but this is turning into another one of those REALLY long posts.
