Opinions about the song Lost For Words

Does anyone else besides me think that Lost For Words was Dave expressing his frustation after the fall out berween him and Roger's? The lyrics

So I open my door to my enemies
And I ask could we wipe the slate clean
But they tell me to please go **** myself
You know you just can't win

Could it mean Dave trying to reconcile with Roger (enemy) and Roger telling Dave to Please Go **** Himself?

Re: Opinions about the song Lost For Words

That was my take.

In fact, I couldn't help but think nearly every song on there was about Roger.

Re: Opinions about the song Lost For Words

Dave claims that it isnt about Roger, so you can believe whatever you choose to believe. I dont think its about him, but i can see how people make that connection. I mean, at that point i dont think he was so frustrated by the whole thing that he wrote an album about it.

Re: Opinions about the song Lost For Words

The overt message throughout the entire TDB album is "Communication", and that is the party line if you ask Dave Rick or Nick about the album..

The subtext though is the difficulty of communications with Roger through the breakup and in subsequent years (up to the point when the disc came out.. 92 I think). The entire disc is a very subtle history of Roger's relationship with the Floyd post split.

Re: Opinions about the song Lost For Words

Well I wouldn't say that the whole album is about the split with Roger. But i think there are a few references towards it. I mean ya your right Dave said that it wasn't about Roger. But you'd think at the time what better way to get things off his chest. But I guess either way it doesn't matter since the album kicks some serious ass no matter what!

Re: Opinions about the song Lost For Words

The underlying theme is in fact the loss of communication;which is in every song except "Take It Back".This is exemplified by the inclusion in post script of the phonecall made by Steve O'Rourke to Gimour.
As for Lost For Words;I definitely think its a bit more towards RW."Is It True That You Knock Your Fists To The Floor?,There'll be no safety in numbers when the right one walks in thru the door" this is related to the image of boxing gloves ( placed in opposite direction for pun!) Cause maybe at some point BDG thought that The Showdown with Rog would end in a boxing bout!
Anyway a good album in comparision to mindless babble of "Yet Another Movie" of MLOR,don't you think?

I think that the Boxing match is a metaphor for the Gilmour-Waters relationship over the years. Even when they were "getting along" and "working together" they were routinely argueing and struggling for control of the product contents -- lyrics vs. music.
Obviously there was the court battle, self-explanitory, then in the post-Waters Floyd era they were in a fight with each other for record sales and who was the "legitimate" heir to the Floyd tradition., etc., even though it was unannounced and both parties would deny it. The 'boxing match' continued at least till Jul 2, 05...and will probably go on in some form or another 'til they're both gone.

Re: Opinions about the song Lost For Words

From a musical standpoint, its hard to deny that it sounds like WYWH. The intro solo sounds so similar. Gilmour even does that thing where he plays identical notes on two different strings(sorry for butchering that guitar gurus, but you know what i mean). Pleasant song though, even heard it on a local radio station that usually plays Acdc, van halen 24/7.

I read somewhere, (and maybe someone can back me up here or I will find the source) that's exactly what it's about and Dave admitted that the one particular part was taken from real life where Daves lawyers sent Rogers lawyers (that is after all how mature adults communicate) a note asking to wipe the slate clean and Roger responded through his lawyers with a note that just said, "Please go f*ck yourself" I am sure that Dave actually admitted this

Actually, I'm sure he didn't. I will assume that you dreamt that up, until such time as you can produce a legitimate source for that fictional nonsense.

They were getting along and working together just fine until Dark Side became successful - it was then that the battles started.

Dave has said that they never went to court. So I am going to need an explanation there, actually

It's debatable as to what they were really fighting over. Live 8 represented a very public reconciliation made possible because Roger realized he was being hypocritical in his refusal to compromise. He compared himself and Dave to Bush and Bin Laden - two powerful men at two extreme (read: insane) opposites of an idealogical spectrum who are unable to budge as a result of being unable to communicate. Immovable object and unstoppable force meet, with destructiveness breaking out as a result.

It would make more sense if it was the other way around because, at least recently, it seems like David is having a much harder time leaving the past behind him, when it comes to getting back together with Roger.

That maybe now but not in '94 when TDB came out.

Re: Opinions about the song Lost For Words

I think it was a rather uninspired attempt to recreate the magic of WYWH.

And of course it's about Roger.
