Like Apples and Oranges

Comparing Syd and Dave is rather like comparing Apples and Oranges. Dave is certainly the more accomplished guitarist, more controlled. Syd was highly innovative though and much more spontaneous. Heavily into experimental effects (Binson echo, original use of slide) not only in guitar but with his life. It is thus very hard to make such a comparison between two such opposite styles.

there is no use in questioning who's the better guitarist techically. But, i like Syd's sound better, although Dave is a much better guitarist. Syd is still my favorite guitarist, along with Robbie and Pete. And i like Syd's unpolished experimental style better.
But, you really can't compare them.

Binson echo

Binson one of the first makers of echo machines, based in Milan, Italy. Syd was one of the first to use the echo machine extensively to change the sound of his Telecaster. The unit he used was a primitive Binson unit but the effect was stunning. If you read the Syd biographies, there will be much mention about his use of the Binson unit.

I agree with the Apples and Oranges comment. But I think that Dave gets a leg up because without him Barrett wouldn't have his solo albums.

I like Syd a lot, and his story is really sad...but Gilmour. Prefer his voice and he dragged the band in the right direction.

Another vote for Dave. Dave is probably my favorite guitarist of all time.

I tell non-Floyd fans this, and they tell me something like "hes technically perfect, but souless" but I just don't understand that at all...

Dave of course. But the comparison is unfair, Syd wasn't much more than a young, extremely talented amateur.

Gilmour any day of the week and twice on Sundays (I read that in a post here, lol). I think Gilmour is one of the best guitarists and songwriters on the planet, I absolutley worship him. Syd was great too, though.

Thats's a stupid comment they're making. David Gilmour plays with more feel, emotion, and "soul" then about any guitarist I know.

Souless are the guys that may shred or go fast but lack emotion. Guys like Eddie Van Halen, Jimmy Page, and Steve Vai lack soul in my opinion
