Jimmy Page lacks soul??? Pah.

Syd was always out to kill his guitar, using different effects, thrashing away and playing different ways.

Gilmour's guitar was beautiful, calculated, well done and powerful. I'll give Gilmour the edge for overall sound, although Syd came up with better riffs and experimented more.

they're very different, i mean its not too hard to play some of barrett's songs but would you ever be able to come up with stuff like that how he did? i'm quite sure gilmour is technically a better guitarist though (but of course syd was better looking )

Why, Gilmour of course.

And to the person who said Page lacks soul - You just don't get it, laddy. Page's guitar wasn't any more a guitar to play melodic leads as much as it was a self-expression tool, but people took it all the wrong way since then, turning it into pyrotechnics. Is it really impossible for someone to feel that emotionally wild? Is it really the "wrong" way? Gilmour pretty much always plays slow, I guess he's doing it the "wrong" way to some others.

But if you think Page is a soulless guitarist, listen to Tangerine. He wrote both the lyrics and music I think Page is most expressive through his chord and arpeggio work though. Stairway, The Rain Song, Dazed and Confused(TSRTS), etc.

I don't think this comparison is unfair as much as it is RIDICULOUS. Okay, maybe Dave played a little better, and he could probably hold his own a little better, but lets face the facts, without Syd Barrett, the modern Floyd sound we know & love would not exist today.

Without Syd, there definitely wouldn't be any 'Wish You Were Here'.

Come on folks, this thread is terrible. Why should any of the Floyd guys be held higher than the others. I cannot say that I like Dave better than Syd. BUT, I like how Pink Floyd played more spacey types of rock music after Gilmour had joined on, rather that just psychadelica with Barrett.

I believe it was a good thing that Syd left, he lived out his prime and wrote some great songs, but The Floyd was ready to move on and it was Dave who helped the band grow, though I love Syd, I'd have to say Dave.

Imagine how different Floyd would have been had Jeff Beck said yes to the offer

Speaking about Beck, did anyone notice that on the Pompeii Director's Cut when Gilmour is in the studio he's playing the lead parts from Beck's Bolero? It sounds a little different since Gilmour is putting his own touch to it, but it sounds almost exactly like it, just with a slide.

Thank god Roger hooked up with Mr Beck for ATD, though.

David Gilmour is my favorite member, far from the others. But my style of music is much closer to Syd's than to David. The best voice...David, without a doubt!!!!

Yeah... i agree, althoguh i think Page has soul on their live performances, though, he could have more... one guitarist i feel is completly without soul though is the Dream Theater guy... can't remember his name right now, cause i'm bloody blasted; haven't slept in a while...

His name is John Petrucci.
I don't agree with you totally, but sometimes he can be cold.

David Gilmour.

In an interview with Dave, he said something along the lines of, "Me and Syd would play together, teaching each other guitar. I was the better guitarist, but creativity just seemed to radiate from Syd". Not his exact words, but that's the general idea.
