Re: The New CD Thread

Great idea, monkey!!

I bought two cd's a couple days ago. The latest Neptunes /N.E.R.D. release called 'Fly or Die' and Godspeed You Black Emperor's debut F#A#.

The N.E.R.D recording is, so far, very disappointing. I was expecting a masterpiece considering the praise these fellas have received recently and the work they've produced. The production is sub par and the songwriting isn't good. I'm hoping a two week break from the recording will help it to grow on me later. Fat chance though.

F#A# on the otherhand is beautiful. It took a little while to get into, but that's what GYBE is all about for me. It took me a couple of weeks to really understand their recording "Lift Your Skinny Fists". As soon as I did, I was hooked. Definately worth the $14.

Re: The New CD Thread

my friend burned me Gone Gone Gone by The New Deal not too long ago in an effort to get me into them. I really like it. It's like techno somewhat, but its really good. Its physically played and it has a real bass and drums, with a damn good drummer. They tour too, so i mean its not all this programmed shit. Its music you could dance too, but also listen to seriously and find really cool things. I really want the real album now, I'll get it one of these days.

Re: The New CD Thread

I bought "Americana" by The Offspring a few days ago. Most of the songs are really good. I'm not really a huge fan of punk music, but I really love this album, and most of the Offspring's stuff. The guitar is usually pretty simple, but it kicks ass! And the drumming is awesome too.

Re: The New CD Thread

Well, let's see, the last time I went to buy cds I went on a buying binge and got Soundgarden's "Badmotofinger" Guns N Roses "Greatest Hits" and A Perfect Circle "Mer De Norms"(is that right?)

I was expecting Badmotofinger to be great, some kind of work of art, but i was a bit disappointed, the music is so heavy and dreary its nearly impossible to listen to all the way through. The drumming is pretty good, the lyrics are good, but the singing is a bit over the top at times and the guitarist is repetitive, boring, predictable and relatively uninspired. The best tracks are "Rusty Cage" "Jesus Christ Pose" "Searching With My Good Eye Closed" and "Outshined"
Greatest Hits wasn't greatest hits, it was two or three songs off of every album, I really don't need to hear four tracks off of the Spaghetti Incident. I couldn't believe "Estranged" wasn't on there but its alright. Should have had more tracks off of Appetite For Destruction.
Mer De Norms, had some good songs like "Judith" and "Three Libras" but all in all, a pretty average album, no other song really grabbed my attention. James Maynard Keenan seemed to be holding every note a little too long and although it added to the angsty sound of "Three Libras" it really got tiresome. A Perfect Circle are one of those bands that are real hit and miss, they make some gems and they make some songs that really leave you scratching your head.

i was just going to ask about that cd. you seem a little disappointed in it? is it worth buying? my friend told me it was really good, but they're his favourite band so its a bit hard to judge from someone who likes them better than any other band if you know what im saying?

Re: The New CD Thread

I bought Dream Theater's "Images and Words", a few weeks ago. I don't like it that much. It sounds like they haven't quite found their niche yet but they're trying. Some of the tracks are alright, but it's not as impressive as "Awake".

Re: The New CD Thread

The last actual CDs that I bought was when I was in this solid Krautrock phase. I managed to buy the excellent "The Wumme Years" boxset by Faust (and saved 60 bucks on it, too!). If you haven't heard of these guys, they're great. They do a lot of tape experimentation, and made a lot of sounds I've never heard before. They "kind of" have coherent "songs" but the CD's great just to see what crazy thing will pop on next in a song. Heck, you can't really go wrong with the lyrics to one song. (DADDY! TAKE A BANANA! TOMORROW IS SUNDAY!)

I also got the ever famous Krautrock masterpiece "Tago Mago" by Can. Basically imagine Pink Floyd with a really good drummer (no offense to Nick, but this guy sounds like a drum machine! A precursor to techno!) and an avant-garde/funk groove throughout all the songs. And throw in some really crazy tape experimentation.

Re: The New CD Thread

I invested in some good dough I had been saving up over the year (and besides, BMG was having a sale ) ::

1. Bought all the Radiohead CDs. Man on man! Am I digging Pablo Honey and The Bends now!
2. Cantos de Amor - Gipsy Kings. Another cool album by these guys. pretty fantastic.
3. Sleeping With Ghosts - Placebo. This I reckon, is their best album YET! Fantastic voice and IMHO, they are developing a unique style/charecter of their own
4. untitled (Led Zeppelin IV) and Houses Of The Holy - Led Zeppelin. It's Led Zep... 'nuff said

And since I also recently invested in a 10 GB iPOD, I am now flat broke.

Re: The New CD Thread

I never really liked their earlier stuff but I was pleasantly surprised with them. I can't nearly get enough of The Bends now

Yeah I was a little disappointed, its still good and I only paid ten bucks for it so it was worth the money, if you go to a place and its selling for 15-20 don't buy it, but if you can get a good deal, its worth it.
