| Re: "Keep Talking"--through THAT thing?! A vocoder (as Tower of Faith says) is a synthesizer meant for the human voice. It has a load of knobs and switches and sliding faders and whatnot, which you patch a mic through to get various vocal effects. Heard during the Lord's Prayer bit of 'Sheep' and also heard modifying the dog's barks in the quiet bit of 'Dogs'. A talkbox is what Frampton used, Gilmour used, etc. with the tube in the mouth and all that. Heard during 'Pigs (3DO)'. |

| Re: "Keep Talking"--through THAT thing?! I'm pretty sure that on the album version it was a simpletext program for the vocals (a la Stephen Hawking) using either an Amiga or Apple. There are PC emulations of these programs that can be found on the web... The basic workings of a talkbox is that the guitar signal enters the box, is transformed into sound, projected through a small plastic tube into the performer's mouth. Basically, you just move your mouth and tongue as if you were talking, and the sound that comes out of your mouth is picked up by the microphone. The workings of a vocoder are a bit more technical. Basically a vocoder blends 2 sounds: the carrier (usually a synthesizer or sampler) and the modulator (usually vocals or a drum pattern). Thus, the frequency of the carrier is modulated, resulting in a 'talking synthesizer'. I'm not even going to get into things like 4, 12, 32, 512 band vocoders, filters and envelopes......... blah, blah, blah...... I apologize if this post makes little sense, as it was cheap nite at the pub tonite...
