Re: "Keep Talking"--through THAT thing?!

I just saw the video of "Keep Talking" from PULSE...and I must admit to being rather naive in music matters--until that, I had never seen a Vocoder before.

Naturally, it looked a little bit...weird.

HOW can he stand that thing?! It looks like he's got it stuffed halfway down his throat! (I exaggerate...at least, I think I do!) Maybe someone here who has actually used a Vocoder can explain how you can possibly put up with it?!

Okay, Joker. That was NOT what I was thinking!

Personally, it reminded me too much of a respirator or something like that.

But anyway, how does that not REALLY bother him?

Re: "Keep Talking"--through THAT thing?!

I don't think it actually goes down the throat. I haven't actually used one before, but I've seen people use it and I have played guitar for a while and what I'm pretty sure it does is it just goes to the back of his mouth, but to the side and between his teeth, almost as if you were to stick your finger in your mouth but putting in in between your molars to the side and emitting noises from your throat that are sent out when the strings of the guitar are strummed. I could be wrong, but that's what I get out of it.

A somewhat ingenious device. Actually an instrument in indian classical music exists that makes use of a vibrating metal plate. It's as sharp as a blade and you have to have that thing dancing over your tongue. If you aren't too careful, it'll cut your tongue to shreads. It makes a kind of a "Newang" sorta sound (It's very difficut to replicate

Re: "Keep Talking"--through THAT thing?!

I forget what the thing's called, but Peter Frampton is pretty well known for using one, and for the one and only mention he'll ever get on this forum, Ritchie Sambora of Bon Jovi, also used one on "Livin' on a prayer.

Re: "Keep Talking"--through THAT thing?!

Fixx, that is called a talk box. Frampton, Joe Walsh, and Gilmour use them(on Pigs 3O, and Keep Talking) How it works is.....

The guitar signal enters a processor, the sound is then sent up a tube into Gilmour's(or whoevers) mouth. they can then shape their mouth however they want, it acts as a speaker, the sound then goes into the microphone.

Re: "Keep Talking"--through THAT thing?!

Slightly off-topic, but do you know what thing Reeves Gabrels (of David Bowie's band) used on his guitar once ?! The vibrator. And I kid you not. It sounded fantastic btw

Re: "Keep Talking"--through THAT thing?!

Another dumb question now. I assume that the "normal" microphone is switched off or somehow overridden, because it looks as if he still does have a normal mike there, and something has got to keep the sound of his unchanged voice from reaching the speakers.

Is this at all close to correct?

Re: "Keep Talking"--through THAT thing?!

You dont actually talk with that talk box tube in your mouth. You just shape your mouth, so it is the normal mic.

Re: "Keep Talking"--through THAT thing?!

You know, sometimes I feel very stupid! But now that I actually think about it, it makes sense.

Can you tell who in this thread is a keyboard player?

Re: "Keep Talking"--through THAT thing?!

The first vocoder (or Guitar box as it was called by that time) was used on Iron Butterfly's 1971 album "Metamorphosis" by the guitarist Mike Pinera. He later said that it was foolish, because "it sounded like some guy getting sick in the next room".

Yes, GeddyJunior, that is known as a talkbox. A Vocoder is actually a voice distorter. I think anyway. As far as I know, the effect used in the middle of Sheep ("The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want...") and also at the end of Love Bites by Def Leppard ("If you've got love in your sights... watch out, love bites") is known as a Vocoder.

And since we're on the subject of talkboxes... FRAMPTON RULES
