Re: Pink Café - Amsterdam

I was at the Pink Floyd café earlier today. They played Roger Waters "In th Flesh" DVD when I was there. The version of "Dogs" is great, Doyle's performance is awesome, and Jon Carin and Roger's singing is great.

But I didn't like the smell there at all.

I talked to a funny, stoned old man who could a few words in norwegian. But he didn't know who David Gilmour was and didn't know anything about the concert tonight.

I'll be there next month, but without DG concert!

Re: Pink Café - Amsterdam

I was there at last week and it was not necessary to request PF because they were playing "Delicate Sound of Thunder" video! Oh, it was so nice, that music, that funny smell and the clocks around the walls, the free machine game and... the funny smell! But they don't sell any alcoholic drinks, i didn't know!

Other coffeeshops that i liked: The Doors and the Coffeeshop Grasshopper.

Ah, THAT funny smell. Now I get it. That will be from those "funny" cigarettes being smoked, I'll warrant.

The Doors Cafe is a great Place. As is the Ummagumma Floyd Cafe. But The grasshopper was weak it reminded me of a Bennigins or some crap. But here is a picture of me in the Floyd Cafe with the clocks

Re: Pink Café - Amsterdam

Terrible news, folks! Terrible, terrible news.

The Pink Floyd Café, Amsterdam is no longer with us; it's gone, so our new APFFN member, Zee, has recently informed us.

I'm seriously bummed out over it. I wasn't joking in the other thread when I said it was my first and main stop in Amsterdam. It was true.

I've been to Holland many, many times, probably more than any other country in Europe. I've done the tulip fields, the flower markets, Anne Frank House (always leave this one for last. always), many of the several brilliant musea (=backache) worth visiting, The Heineken brewery, the diamond shops, the sex shops/shows, the bars and clubs.

Stood outside brothel windows humming How much is that doggie in the window?, and the one night I had to sleep on a Centrum Station bench wrapped round my luggage because there was no rooms at the VVV and I was leaving the next morning; the "Botels" docked behind the station are a completely other story as are the rent-a-bike escapades.

I even visited the Melkweg Multimedia Centre (The Milky Way) back in the early 80's when it was a bit of a dump but an international wonderland for all that. I haven't even been to Scotland yet but The 'Dam was THE Place, and the PF café was my Mecca.

My first reaction is, well, that's Amsterdam finished for me now, but Zee has something there I hope is still worth seeing. Truthfully, any 'Dam coffee shop will do me, especially if they still have the Greenhouse ones.

I guess there's now little more to say...

Re: Pink Café - Amsterdam

indeed this is true, and a sad state of affairs it is.

i am lucky enough to have a flat in amsterdam city centre, and like bride of a bull this was my favourite. apart from the obvious floyd connection the staff, the ambience, the vibe was the best in the city and it is sadly missed. Too many dutch coffee shops (the bulldog et al) are filled with (no offence intended) drunk idiotic english stag do's. not a good scene.

Luckily the dampkring chain is a good one and are running it nicely. I can be found there two or three nights a week making sure the old ways are still being passed on (play floyd again godammit!)

The sad thing is, because of the reputation of the bulldog chain a lot of good coffee shops in amsterdam are closing/will be closed because of the mayor trying to clean up the city. this means that good, well run, safe coffee shops like the bluebird, abraxas etc are all now under threat. you can guarantee that this new 'initiative' means that a lot of these well run places will have to close and we will be left with.... yes you guessed it.... a lot of s**t on the streets like the bulldog and grasshopper chains. the very ones they should get rid of. but of course these places bring in the tourists, so they will stay open.

I would implore anyone who is visiting amsterdam in the near future, do not let the good independant coffee shops go down. visit dampkring, abraxas, grey area, even barneys, but leave bulldog and grasshopper etc alone. we cant afford for ALL the good ones to disappear.

rant over. thanks for reading.

oh yeah, and if you are visiting amsterdam my adopted home city say hi and hopefully i can point you in the right direction of a good night out!

Re: Pink Café - Amsterdam

I must make a note of all this for my next trip over the Atlantic! Sad to hear such a legendary establishment is no more.
