yeah i don't get it

...may someone explain the lyrics to "Welcome to the Machine" please? I feel dumb...I mean, there is a deeper message, no? ererer If this has already been discussed, I'm sorry and I should have checked more throughly. Just tell me there was one and I will attempt to find it.

Re: yeah i don't get it

Roger was always obsessed with the music industry.

Hell, take any one of his songs and it will have an allusion to either his daddy's death or the horrible money-manipulating music industry.

'Welcome to the machine' pretty much welcomes a band/person into the "machine" that has become the music business circa 1975. Roger complains how everything has become automated and processed. He talks of the kids looking up to fake idols, which are also created by the machine. In other words, the world is going to hell and we are doomed to die in front of our television sets.

Re: yeah i don't get it

Wow thanks, that makes sence. Wonderful, bluesman. Its hard for me to find analysis of lyrics that aren't rambaling manifestos or other topics going off on extreme trangents that don't make any sence. Heh, automated and processed. Sounds like Hollywood. Well, if we are doomed to die that way, at least we can do it to pretty music. Kinda reminds me of californication.
I'm also trying to figure out "us and them" ...I use to think it had to do with war...is that the basic jist or is there more?

thanks gillis99, I appericiate it!

Re: yeah i don't get it

I agree that its about the music industry (catch the executives and moochers laughing and partying it up at the end of the track) but the song has always reminded me of a dystopia like in Orwell's '1984'...Something about the bleak mood of the song, plus much of the lyrics...

"What did you dream? It's alright we told you what to dream!"
"Welcome to the machine" meaning welcome to the totalitarian world.

Maybe incorrect, but ah...

Re: yeah i don't get it

Us and Them describes humanity's basic habit of categorizing and grouping ourselves, which often leads to discrimination and separatism. More often than not this spawns from the feeling of needing to belong and applies to anything from Religion to War (where Roger's daddy died). Fit the rest of the lyrics in there.

And call me Pipey.

speedandsteel, I have not yet read 1984, but your idea sounds like it has merit. Good book?

Re: yeah i don't get it

I don't think you got it Joey; it's me, Piper@Gates.

Asrai: I've listened to the records enough times to see stuff that isn't really even there. Plus, I was on this site when it used to discuss pink floyd collectively (what a time it was) and I gained most of my knowledge from the Veterans that used to dwell here.

It's a true story.

I have to ask, Pipey, why the change of persona?

I too need to ask. Has the old sarcastic and sardonic codger disappeared?

Oh, its a GREAT book. Very bleak and depressing, but one of the best books I have ever read. Highly recommended. I plan on reading 'Animal Farm' by Orwell next.
