Big enough amp?

My understanding (at least a friend told me this) is that one requires at least 50 watts to overpower a drumset. And so I have a 65 watt amp, and in my garage that works out extremely well as I don't have to go past 2 on the volume and my drummer is drumming pretty loudly. However, does anyone know if this is loud enough for performances in, say, a gymnasium (a high-school gymnasium for example) or for even an outdoor performance? (I'm not even certain of the conditions outdoors yet, but May 30th I'm supposed to play with some friends downtown, and it's outdoors I believe).

Any opinions or advice would be appreciated, thanks.

Re: Big enough amp?

It should work. If there's a PA you might try mic'ing you're amp if it doesn't go loud enough. But it should be loud enough.

Re: Big enough amp?

65 watts should give you enough power to easily fill a small gym. In an outdoor arena it should be OK depending on the size of the crowd and the area you need to cover. If your playing to a few hundred folks in say a smallish park, your fine. If you have 3000 people in an ares the size of a football stadium, then you may be pushing it. If you have access to a PA system I'd mic your amp and drive through the PA.

The more important question though is.. does your amp go to 11??? If it does then you have nothing to worry about.

I don't know if that pic is large enough Ablaze, you may want to consider posting another, larger one..

Re: Big enough amp?

Marshall is good stuff, good job on the amp. The only thing is my friend blew a celestion speaker in his mg100. Then he bought a Jcm 900, and he's getting a 4x12, the bugger.
