Please help!

Please help me.I have to do a 10-15min speech about a band (PF in my case).Everyone else is talking about their fave bands and how they were formed in 19-- and they consist of members blah blah and their first single was blah blah.....stuff that everyone already knows....i want to take a unique view...talk about something completly different and inspiring even....BUT WHAT??? Any ideas?? It's for a music appreciation course and I have to use visual and sound aids, but at least 7 mins talking...Please give me some ideas on what I can talk about...And what aids to use....and I would like to finish it off with an inspiring Floyd quote or lyric. Any ideas for that too are welcome.

There aren't a lot of people outside of the hard core Floyd fans that know a lot about Syd Barrett. I recommend you center your speech around him, and how it inspired the future Pink Floyd that everyone knows. Before I really learned about Floyd I had no idea there was even a Syd Barrett. He's a very interesting story. Do a little research on his descension.

Either that or put Shine On You Crazy Diamond in the CD Player and pass a doobie around

Then you could get them amoused by spending a few words about their unlucky former manager who, after Barrett's departure, of course preferred managing him rather than going on with Pink Floyd.

Thanks

Thanks guys....Like the Syd Barret idea.I dont know an awful lot about him my self, so it will be a fasinating journey and learning experience for me and all concerned. I think you are on to something with the doobie idea too!!
I was actually smoking on the weekend and I swear I saw a floyd film clip on tv of ...heart of the sun and it was like this kalidascope effect on the screen which seemed to go on for about 10-20 mins, but the people who were with me later said they never saw it and I had taped the whole music show and so I flipped back to try to find it but it wasnt there...Did I dream the whole thing?? HAS THIS EVER HAPPENED TO ANYONE ELSE???
So, back to the project....anyone know where I can pull up some top noch Syd Barret info.

Thanks for all your contributions

Yes, but first he'd have to figure out what "amoused" means.

Here are a few basic things from this site. I'm sure you can google in plenty of other info. Also, read the book "A Saucerful of Secrets" by Nick Schaffner if you can find it.

7 minutes are barely sufficient to talk about one single song like Time or Us And Them or Echoes... talking about Pink Floyd means talking about life, death, madness, insanity, miscommunication... should I go on? Plenty of subjects for you to explore, actually.

Get a copy of the Dark Side of the Moon DVD. One common theme runing through all of PF music is "Humainty". Roger keeps asking "Is humanity really humane?" This theme keep popping up in just about all of PF albums between 1972 and 1986. Us and Them, Fletcher Memorial Home, The Trial, Dogs and Sheep are all good examples.

During the interview sections on the DVD Roger speaks on this topic and lends some good insights as to whats going on behind the music and what inspires his lyrics. There is also some great insights in the bonus footage on there as well.

You could do much worse than listen to this Fulghum geezer, and from the sounds of it, rarely better.
