Re: Syd Barrett's First Trip

Okay, I saw it and first of all it's two completely different bits of film taken months apart put together in one. You can tell by the length of Syd's hair that one was taken months after the other. Anyway, the whole 'tripping' part of the film is just some STUPID art film the guys did when attending art school. I've read that. And the guy holding the camera seems like HE'S the one tripping. Syd does not look all that out of it to me. I mean, he seems like he's doing more acting than tripping. Running around on those hills? Yeah, try to do that when you're tripping. I'm not saying he's not on something, but I don't think it was that harsh. Oh then they get into the van or a car and film the streets of London for a few seconds. Then it's someone w/ no shirt in some apartment or flat if you're English. He's on a balcony walking around. I cannot tell who it is cuz they hardly show his face, but I don't think it's Syd. Now to the second part of the film. It's just the boys (Floyd) outside of Abbey Road studios unloading gear and chatting with some girls. They show some girl dancing for a minute then Syd who looks like he's dong jumping jacks! Maybe he's dancing too? Looks more like jumping jacks though. Then Roger brings something into the studio w/ some girl. And they show them in there for a minute. Syd doesn't actually go into the studio as he's busy with some girl the whole time. First by the van, then sitting on the grass together chatting away. And by the way, I have never seen Syd look so NORMAL! He's just talking and smiling and looks very happy. No blank stare or angry look. Then it's back into the van and some more filming of the streets and a couple of people that are hanging out on the street in some poor section of London. Anyway, you're lucky if you can even see what's going on because like I said the camera man seems like he's on something! He never holds the camera still and tries out all these freaky angles and stuff. Just like some really bad student art film. The one Jim Morrison did when he was a film student was way more disturbing. Him being shot w/ blood coming out of his mouth. Another crazy poet. Well, that's my review. Hope it makes sense!!

Re: Syd Barrett's First Trip

Yeah, I agree. Although you see syd playing with mushrooms, you never once see him eating it or doing anything that would suggest he was tripping. Except maybe the fact that he screams at one point, but he might be screaming at one of the people there, who knows.

Rather boring and totally a waste of my time downloading it. It's the exact opposite of what you'd expect to see.

Re: Syd Barrett's First Trip

Most sources will say that this wasn't Syd's first trip, and it was acid, not 'schrooms......

As for the 'watch it or not' debate, I guess it's part and parcel of the Syd myth.....Anyone who caught a Floyd concert 65-67 would have been watching Syd off-his-nut creating some pretty mad music....

This wasn't the start of someone's mental disintergration, this was a student having some fun, and filming it......

Re: Syd Barrett's First Trip

I have this 'Syd's first trip' vid and it seems highly staged and unconvincing.

my guitar teacher was telling me about this. He said that he was in a book store looking at the used CD ben and saw a DVD entidled "Syds first trip" and said he wanted to get it. He said that he felt guilty for the fact that he wanted to get it also. Good stuff, i moved away tho, i havnt talked to him in like 3 months (give or take?) anywase, would be a blast if he was on these forums...

Re: Syd Barrett's First Trip

I don't understand why somebody would even bother to film such an event. Although, I suppose there is a certain amount of curiosity surrounding this item; especially when one considers what happened to Syd later on.

Re: Syd Barrett's First Trip

I have seen this video.. I didnt enjoy it as much as i thought i would.. i was expecting to hear syd talk, but i believe he was actually on shrooms, i have done shrooms and it is actually quite easy to run on hills like he is on the movie but i believe this movie is definetly from two different times, its a strange video. I read in "syd barrett and the dawn of pink floyd" that syd and his friends would go out into the forest and tape each other being high on shrooms and acid so i do believe this footage is real but from several different times.
