Question All from their heads?

Ok, a friend of mine who likes PF but isn't obsessed with them as much as I am said that he heard somewhere they never learned to play their instruments. Now I can agree with this partly because in the Director's cut of Pompeii I think it was David who said their music was all just extensions of what was coming out of their heads but then when I listen to Echoes there is no way in hell they could just make that up right? So basically my question is in the beginning did they or did they not know how to play?

Re: All from their heads?

That's not what Dave meant. He was saying that the machines can't operate themselves. They have to put in the machines the music that is in their head. They were of course referring to synthesizers and whatnot, because I guess people were accusing them of hiding behind all that equipment.

I think they learned the hard way. By experimentation and practice. As far as I know they did not have any formal training.

i think they are superhuman and it just flowed out spontaneously.no thinking involved.

after all they were brain-dead from all that poison they fed their minds.

Re: All from their heads?

They are a phenomena.....same like Motzart and the classical music monsters. They will be widely recognized and honoured more next generations....when they pass away..like most of the exceptional artists and scientists. Already many of the fans in PFFN are 16 or younger.

I wonder why Rog or Dav hasn't got the title SIR yet? taking in consideration SIR Elton. That was understood in the past cause Maggy definitely never liked them.

Re: All from their heads?

Considering how Keith Richards acted when Mick was knighted, I'd hate to see how Rog or David would act if their sworn enemy was knighted.

Haha, I just turned 16. Remember in elementary school 1-5 grade when you had music class and they kept telling you about motzart and stuff? One day they will be telling kids about Pink Floyd.

Re: All from their heads?

Back then, echoes, atom heart mother, etc, ideas flew about and the best ones were pieced together by the likes of alan parsons. later, individual power struggles desroyed this accidental creativity, destroying the magic that was. absolute power, or even the sense of such a thing corrupts absolutely.

Re: All from their heads?

Dave is CBE.

People are apparently only knighted for public service (such as large donations to charity).

They were never into drugs as bad as so many assume.

As individual musicians, they were talented at the least, but no where near prodigous. When pieced together it was their combined tastes, talents, and wonderful ears for extraordinary music that resulted in our beloved albums. And yes, some members can be credited more than the rest.

And as far as practice, I know Dave had no teaching (just his own desire to play), and I believe Roger and Nick were in the same boat (however I could be wrong). And something tells me Rick had formal teaching on the piano, but taught himself organ/synthesizer (as it carries over so easily).
