Beatles reference? what? "The outer lock rolled slowly back The service men were heard to sigh For there revealed in glowing robes Was Lucy in the sky " I was curious whether or not this might be a reference to the Beatles song "Lucy in the sky with diamonds" which was released a year before. People have mentioned that this song inspired Roger to write "Point me at the sky", and i was wondering if maybe it inspired him to put in this line or something. anybody know where it came from?

Very likely, yes. "Let There Be More Light" was on Saucerful, which was released in 1968. Lucy was on Sgt Pepper's, released a year earlier, so they had plenty of time to throw in that Beatles reference. Now that I'm basically done repeating you, I'm gonna make like a tree and get the !@#$ outta here!

Just to confirm, I never heard the phrase "Lucy In The Sky" until SGT. Peppers, so I doubt it predated that. "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" supposedly meant LSD.

Either that or a classmate of Julian Lennon. Or both.

The story is that Julian came home with a crayon drawing of his teacher, whose name was Lucy. John asked him what it was a picture of, and Julian said, 'It's Lucy in the sky with diamonds!' and John thought, That's beautiful, and wrote a song about it. He didn't realize until afterwards that it made the initials LSD. In the same interview, he admitted to using LSD and stated that the song wasn't a reference to the drug, so I'm not sure why he'd lie about it. Anyway, there you go.

At the time, they were being accused of making drug references in many of their songs. "Day Tripper", "I'd love to turn you on", "a little help from my friends", etc. I heard Paul recently admitted most of the stuff really was about drugs afterall. But maybe he's lying now. Who knows. No one cares, sure as hell.

Yeah I heard about that. I also read somewhere that the reason John wrote 'I am the Walrus' was because he was sick of everyone analyzing his songs, so he wrote this one which is just insane. It rules though, I'd say one of my fav Beatles songs!
