Re: Echoes: Best of Pink Floyd

Alright...i own every Pink Floyd album...and I'm still gonna buy this one! Does it seem cool to anyone else that all the songs are mixed together and play as one continuous onslaught of Floyd?

Yes. Into it. It works really well on, um, "Works".

Works is a joke...Echoes will not only give established Floyd Fans a new twist on their music, but give a new generation the best of what Floyd has to offer...Works was limited in that manner...

Uh, well, the cover looks nice, but I still don't think it's a very good idea. Is There Anybody Out There was a pleasant surprise, but this is just...bleh.

Re: Echoes: Best of Pink Floyd

Ok. So I gave this a full listen. It's alright. In it's favour, it's worth pointing out that all the songs were taken from the original mastering tapes, so it sounds pretty bloody good. On the downside, I'd have to point out that the editing of Echoes (the song) is as clumsy as ****, and that there is absolutely zero purpose behind the abreviated version of Marooned. There are specifically 7 songs on the thing that weren't really worth inclusion, and only serve to illustrate how distant they became from what they once were. Take a listen to Sheep followed by the utterly horrible sounding Sorrow and try to disagree. Also, did we really need When The Tigers Broke Free? It's not really anything, just an excuse for Roger to use the word "Daddy" again.

I know there's the big debate concerning whether this should have been the fan's choice concerning the actual playlist against the artists themselves, but when it's publicised as being a democratic decision on all four member's parts, I find that a little hard to believe. Can you HONESTLY imagine Roger going through his vinyl collection and pulling out either "A Momentary Lapse Of Reason" or "The Divison Bell"? Thought not. In fact, I'd go as far as to say that he had absolutely no input on choosing anything later than "The Final Cut".

3 stars.

Re: Echoes: Best of Pink Floyd

Just because all four members had input into the project doesn't mean each memeber personally approved each track. They all submitted lists of songs they felt appropriate and went from there. David actually had the most say in the end I believe, but it was a joint effort. Concerning the project, David said the following in an interview with Mojo Magazine (Nov. 2001):

MOJO: Presumably, the track selection has been a long and torturous process.

DG: We've been arguing about it since May. Nick sent us a list right at the beginning, then he seemed to lose interest. Rick never seemed to want to get involved in it. It wandered along rather fitfully until recently, when I thought I'd better work out what we should be trying to do with it, whether we should try and represent every album or not, and on what basis we should be choosing songs. In the end we had to get everyone to vote on a list.

MOJO: But most of the songs seemed to have picked themselves.

DG: I agree. When I look at it, it's bloody obvious, really. It's amazing how long the process has been getting it sorted out.

MOJO: What were the main bones of contention?

DG: I wanted Fat Old Sun on there, but none of the others were having it! In fact, the tracklisting is still not finalised. It comes down to what I say at this point. Roger's sort of given up on it. He gets very grumpy because he thinks I tell Nick and Rick what they've got to do and outvote him. You wouldn't want his list. I don't think six tracks from The Final Cut is what people want! Having said that, among the songs that all four of us voted for was The Fletcher Memorial Home. It dates from one of the worst periods of my life. It was a nightmare working with Roger at that time, and I'm heavily disinclined to listen to The Final Cut or anything to do with it. But it's a great song. We've also had arguments about how many Syd tracks to put on. I've managed to get five, but some people are still hustling to lose Bike.

MOJO: Surveying the many Pink Floyd peaks on Echoes must give you a profound sense of musical satisfaction.

DG: There are tons of little moments there, on Echoes, Wish You Were Here, Shine On You Crazy Diamond, they all have elements of that. But you're never entirely satisfied. I still sit and listen to the songs and think, If only...

Re: Echoes: Best of Pink Floyd

In what way did they edit the song Echoes?

Did they skip the psychedelic part?

At first I thought that that part was really annoying, but after a while (after 15 times of repeated listening) I began to enjoy it. But it's still kind of a relief when it fades out.

Re: Echoes: Best of Pink Floyd

Did they put the song, "The Final Cut" on there?
If they didn't, they should have!

I would of thought this is the one Dave would've voted for because of the grand solo!

Re: Echoes: Best of Pink Floyd

im very happy one of these days is on it, but unhappy that saucerfull of secrets and signs of life are not on it. other than that im fine with it all.

i also dont understand why many of the songs are on there, like when the tigers broke free, that is the biggest ? over the thing i reckon i doesnt really matter that its not avalible on any other album i just dont think it needs to be there. but i dont care to be honest, and i dontthink im going to buy it just yet i wanna get more of the albums first like divison bell and atom heart mother before i buy this thing, not that i dont want it i just want the albums first.
and can someone please tell us wat part of echoes is cut out, i know one of the firrst intro bits are missing which shaves about 2 mins of it, but that leaves 5 other mins that are missing, wat are they PLEASE tell us unenlighted ones

Just as a by-the-way, for all of you whining about inclusions and exclusions, I doubt the album was made specifically to suit your wants. Sure, I've got an opinion on it, but it doesn't really matter, 'cos no amount of bitching will change it now that it's been released.

Have a nice day.

Re: Echoes: Best of Pink Floyd

Well said! I think too many people out there think that their personal musical tastes are the last word.

But it's the personal taste that counts : You don't like it, You don't buy it!
