I've just done a quick search for "ummagumma" (thread titles only) and I got 22 results. Why not give it a try?

Re: Ummagumma

Have you read ANY faq pages?

Basically, it's a slang or colloquialism meaning sex.

And if you believe FAQ's on this one, UmmaGumma just means Rock N' Roll (as rock n' roll was originally a slang term for sex).

I remember reading something where David was saying he was having trouble with "The Narrow Way" and he thought he would call ol' Rog' on the tele. Well, turns out Roger said no way, because it was supposed to be some kind of solo effort.

I'm not so sure about it being the product of a band because there wasn't one.

But as far as the ridiculous amounts of drugs, I'd say you probably fairly accurate.

Re: Ummagumma

I will argue against that to the ends of the earth... I sincerely believe that drugs had almost no influence on the Floyd's musical output (unless it was to stop it from happening, in the case of Syd Barrett). But you are right about the Ummagumma studio album intentionally being four solo albums in one... so Dave had to write his own lyrics for once!

Re: Ummagumma

I'm not saying that Pink Floyd are embracing the use of drugs. It's just that there are quite a few drug-related referneces in Floyd's earlier work. For all I know, these may have been a protest against drugs because they could see how destructful they are.

Yes, and that's why it is a terrible album. They do much better when they work together. (Just look at the other 2 "floppers": TFC...Waters work only; AMLoR: Basically BDG writing only.)

Actually I quite like TFC...it's just not up to par with all of the other releases.

Re: Ummagumma

Ummagumma to me is the album where they decided on the way they were going to to go...I mean The Narrow Way really signalled the start of the modern Floyd sound...where the rest of the solo stuff was sort of 'art school'....Roger might not like it but Dave had the vision there...and on Meddle it was there with echoes in full flight...It was like some sort of competition to find the way to go....I mean Dave kept Sid's vision intact insome sort of strange way....

The Narrow Way is incredible! By far the bets part of the Ummagumma studio album. Maybe Dave deserves a bit more credit than I usually give him.

Re: Ummagumma

I rather enjoy Roger's part on the studio album, Grantchester Meadows (in my opinion) is the best original track on the recording, "The narrow Way Part 1" is a close second.

Re: Ummagumma

The only worthwhile bit on UmmaGumma is the live segment. And it's too short. A throwaway album.
