Skill like wine? I got to thinking today. I know, scary right? Do you think that most guitar gods get better with time (like a fine wine), or do their skills seem to fade or "rust"? Take for example, Dave. Do you think he was a better player back in the seventies or do you think he could whip out an even better solo now? How about Clapton? By the way, I just saw him in concert last weekend. Effin' incredible. No words here can describe it. Honest. Do you think he was better back player in the days of Cream and Derek and the Dominoes or is he a better, more skilled player now? I think you get the idea. Thoughts? ~Fletch

It probably varies from guitarist. Those who never quit and always practice probably are better as the years go by and those who take a long 10 year hiatus probably get rusty. Not because they are old but because of the ten year hiatus. Those who devolop arthritis are probably a little rusty too.

Definitely varies with guitarist. Jimmy Page has lost it, Alex Lifeson has never been better.

I think with enough time a guitar god will die and won't be playing much guitar at all.

well, then i'll play devil's advocate: Creatively speaking, everybody loses it. I mean, they may be a better, more experienced player, but they can never recapture the same glory of their respective creative peaks. It all comes down to subjective opinion, but, that's mine. kind of like Sickboy's theory in Trainspotting.

I'd say Gilmour has regressed....in some ways? Clapton has gotten better....more refined I should say? ~Fletch |

Same here. His new stuff is wimpy. It's not rock n' roll, and it's barely blues.
