Travel

where have you traveled?
where do you want to travel?

I personally have been to Italy and Austria and of course I lived in Croatia and have been in other parts of Aus too.
I hate, absolutely detest resort holidays, I mean really.. what's the bloody point of going somewhere if you're just gonna sit by the pool at the hotel. I like the sort of holidays where you get do stuff.. I love hiking holidays

So some of my dream holidays are.. Doing adventure stuff and back packing through NZ..
In Ireland there's this 100 k hike you can take called Wicklow which I would LOVE to do..
I'd love to climb Machu Pichu, Peru is so gorgeous to go hiking in.
I'd love to ride a bike through France, stopping of at little B&Bs and buying wine and cheese.
I'd love to basically backapck through most of europe and parts of south east asia.

I'd love to visits the world great cities, see art galleries, historical monuments etc..

what about you guys?

cheers

Re: Travel

So... Another backpacker in APFFN, heh, Lej? I agree with you, sitting by a resort pool is no fun at all. Whenever I travel, of course I end up going to the main tourist attractions, but mostly as a "moral obligation". I mean, if you go to Paris, you HAVE to visit the Louvre or the Eiffel Tower, right? But, in the end, I have a much better time by sitting in a park or going to a bar and having a beer with locals.

I've been to Europe once with my parents, we rented a motorhome and travelled around for about a month. Then, I've been a second time, as a backpacker with my cousin, going from hostel to hostel. And finally, I've also backpacked (alone, this time) throughout England and Scotland when I went to see Gilmour in concert.

In my opinion, travelling is the greatest thing in life, next to sex (and music). I am now planning my next trip, in about a month. I changed my plans quite a few times already, and I'm still in the midst of planning it all, but so far I expect to go to Spain, backpack around for about a month, and then settle in Salamanca until January. Afterwards, perhaps I'll go to the Netherlands. But we'll see. Machu Picchu seems to be incredible, I have a few friends who have been there, and the pictures and stories they tell are amazing.

Re: Travel

Sadly, I have only travelled the east coast of america. But it was fun, and I didn't have to sit in on hotel room patio, or pool deck. Some cities, in no paticular order, I visited are Washington D.C., very cool place, Philidelphia, went there for a hockey game, and is another beautiful city. Toronto, Canada, is the best place I've been so far, and i want to move there. Down south ive been around North and South Carolina. Florida is a great state, to visit not to live in however, all that heat would get to me. Ive been to Sarasota, Florida, which had some very nice beachs, except for the one i almost drowned at, but thats about it for me, and i want to move to Toronto.

Re: Travel

I've driven through and flown over many a state of the Continental U.S., but I've only ever stayed in Illinois, Indiana, Florida, California, Washington D.C. and Nevada (Las Vegas) for about half an hour on layover. Florida is always nice, Indiana and Illinois are practically the same state, and I ****ing hate California and all it stands for. Been to Mexico twice, and both times weren't all that agreeable.

Re: Travel

Travel surely broadens the mind.

I have been relocated to San Antonio, Texas, Rantoul, Illinois, Mountain Home, Idaho and Lakenheath, UK and have travelled very widely even discounting the places in the US I was taken as a child: Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Tennessee, Virginia, North Carolina and Tijuana, Mexico.

My first REAL adventure was as a green 17yo Air Force GI on my first trip to another BIG City USA: Chicago. Freaked me the hell out, I can tell ya. Culture shock you wouldn't believe.

Re: Travel

I have lived in California (3 years), Texas (19 years) and Saudi Arabia(8 years). Now that I have a real job I try to hit travel around as much as I can while I'm still young. I have explored ALOT of the US with my friends (Camping in Yellowstone, Gambling in Vegas, Mardi Gras in New Orleans, Spring Break in Florida, etc.) I went to England and Scotland for a week a few weeks after first joining this Forum. I've also went to Alaska about 4 years ago (it's the US but it's closer to Russia then the rest of the continental states so it's almost like not being in the US.) I went scuba diving down in Cuzumel Mexico several years ago as well. I went to alot of places all over the world as a kid when I was living in the middle east but I don't count them because I was really young and I didn't care/appreciate about most of the places I went, which is unfortunate.

Re: Travel

I've been in most US States. New Brunswick and Nova Scotia in Canada, Mexico, Ireland, Germany, Austria, Italy, France, Luxembourg & Belgium.

I'd love to go to Egypt and Israel, and wander all over hell in Central and Eastern Europe. If I were wealthy, I'd buy a yacht and hang around the Med.

Re: Travel

grrr.. i did a search and all.. grrr

Paranoid: I weep for you.. In all honesty I really do

Paulo: nothing better than backpacking for sure. I also agree with you on doing the touristy places.. Sigh.. and even more so on going into a pub and hanging out with the locals. The only way you'll discover the best places in town is with the locals. The hidden allies, the gorgeous pubs.. etc Take this for example... Most ppl that come to Adelaide will prolly be told to go to heaven night club.. However Heaven sucks sooo much.. whereas the locals.. know better.. see?

I too would love to do Egypt and stuff as well.. Most of Europe just cos there's SOOOOOO much history.

It's amazing how ppl neglect their own country though.. so I would LOVE to do a driving holiday around Aus.

cheers

Re: Travel

Various places in Florida (Sarasota, Daytona Beach, Orlando, Cape Canaveral).

Atlanta, Georgia. Actually a very nice city, with extreme weather (hot as Tampa in the summer, 20F when I went there in the winter). Also, Norman Park/Valdosta, where I've got relatives - very much boondocks. Nice scenery, though.

Washington DC, not a bad place. Mainly went to the tourist-y places, though.

Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Lovely place... I haven't been in a while, though, so I can't remember much.

Saw a lot of Pennsylvania's countryside, near Scranton - beautiful. Stayed in Scranton a night and saw David Bowie live... it's a pleasant town. Not much going on, though. Caught the bus to Scranton in Philidelphia... I wasen't impressed with Philly, that's all I'll say. (Perhaps I just saw the bad bits.)

NYC. I'm still in love with it, although I spent all of two days there. I want to go back soon, and I just may do so.

Mainly east coast stuff... never been further west than Tennessee.

Re: Travel

Philly used to be quite cool, actually.
I have to admit it's gone downhill lately.

Eh, I've been in all but four states, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Montana are definitely among the most beautiful.
Been to Canada and the Carribean...blah blah.

Personally I'm an NYC girl though.

My uncle just moved to Hawaii, and apparently wants my mother and I to visit this winter, which should be awesome.

I really, really want to backpack through Europe but am kind of afraid to go alone and I know none of my friends will go with.
Lazy gits.

Re: Travel

CRAZY ADVENTURES II

I drove a borrowed Carolla off my sister-in-law from L.A. to Vancouver in 1985 to meet someone on a plane...who didn't bloody arrive, who wasn't even on the plane.

The Canadian border police informed me that there were no handguns or unlicensed firearms allowed and wondered if I had any in my car.

I told them I hadn't known that about Canada, that I didn't own any firearms and that because the car was borrowed any firearms that may or may not be found therein would not belong to me. I told them I hadn't completely searched the vehicle before embarking.

They searched anyway...and halfway through I realised, waiting in their waiting room, I DID have rather incriminating cannabinoidal evidence and paraphenalia in the glove compartment! Shit!

Canadian copper said all was well and I could go and enjoy my visit. Whew! Go Canada!

Peace Park sucked however.

On the subject of travel...for those of you who were worrying about the absence of Fixxy on the website, he sent me a text from Cuba this morning! By all accounts he is having an enjoyable holiday, and there will be some nice tales to regale us with on his return!!

Cool! The most exciting place I've been is Minnesota. Which sucks. But it has a huge-ass lake.
