In my opinion, these two albums are the complete opposites of eachother. The Final Cut IS Roger Water's album, with David & Nick just filling in the empty space. A Momentary Lapse, however, is an album without Roger's influence or input -- it's almost like Floyd's rebirth.

I like both albums. Neither is better to my ears.

The Final Cut has moving lyrics -- it's one of the few things that can penetrate this rock-like heart of mine. While Roger's voice can be a bit hard to digest at times, and musically, this album can't compare to other Floyd-outings, it's one emotional trip. And I love it. I just hear and feel a man pouring out his heart, and I'm going to listen.

On the other hand, the few times I've played AMLOR, I blushed, and made sure my stereo's volume was turned down. While I'm in no way saying that anyone else should be embarassed for liking this album -- I always feel like a goon for having it on, as if the only reason I've ever listened to it is for the Pink Floyd name. Otherwise, it certainly wouldn't be in my CD collection. Gilmour is a fine guitar player, the melodies are fine, it just doesn't move me. It's been a year or so since I've taken the entire album in, so perhaps I'll give it another shot. And if no-one is around, I may even turn the stereo up a bit.

I kind of felt this way, earlier today. You see, for the past week, I had taken a break from A Momentary Lapse as well as The Division Bell, to listen to all the earlier works. Everything from Piper to Atm Hrt Mthr to Animals -- I did it all.

And today, I put on A Momentary Lapse, and I thought, "Oh wow, now I can see why some folks don't care for it". To me, it is still a great album -- but it just cannot compare to the Floyd of the seventies.

The Final Cut -- well now that is all Roger. And I like it. My next purchase will be a good one, I'm going to get 'The Pros & Cons', Music From 'The Body', 'Radio KAOS', and 'Amused to Death' -- all at once. I'm going to "Rog' out" man. I miss his input, and his deep concepts & themes. I also miss the voice.

For me it's AMLOR by far, I can't stand TFC. However I didn't like Animals because the CD mix is teriable compared to the LP I now love it, so if anyone can tell me if the LP (or indeed SACD) version of the final cut is better I may change my mind. As for apples and oranges applejuice is far superior to orange juice.

A Momentary Lapse of Reason has amazing guitar solos, unique production, and music.

The Final Cut has amazing lyrics, awesome production (the beginning to Get Your Filthy Hands off my Desert with the missile), mood and a powerful message.

I love them both equally, but i have yet to purchase the final cut; i only have it on vinyl.

I forgot where I read this, but The Final Cut was one of the first albums to utilize some kind of new sound technology. Therefore, the missiles sound louder than they really are, or something like that. The car sounds also come in clearer & louder. And yes, headphones are supposed to be the ultimate experience.
