I really wonder why almost all of the discussions here eventually turns to the subject "Rog vs Dave"...
Just wanted to share a thought.

Re: I wonder why...and it makes me sad.

Sometimes I think the fans are actually angrier than the bandsmen themselves. So many years, and everyone is still fighting...!

I don't get it.

But have you ever noticed that the behaviour of the fans follows the behaviour of the PF member they hold in the highest esteem?

For many (but NOT ALL!) of the ardent RW fans, that often means a very strident defence of Mr. Waters, perhaps the most likely to say, "I'm right, you're wrong," to completely dismiss everything post RW.

For many of the DG fans, I notice that some of them dislike Mr. Waters' behaviour. They are more likely to be accepting of all PF. They are willing to engage the Hammer Guard (as I saw them called on amp-f) in battle if the topic comes up.

Now for me...I am a fan of Mr. Wright. I, personally, feel no need to get entangled in these battles. The more certain I am of what I think, the less I feel compelled to speak of it (unless, of course, it is a matter of TRUE importance...I don't think the Which One's Pink debate falls into that category). The one thing that can draw me out is if someone makes a completely unfounded accusation; I hate when rumours are tossed around to hurt people. Otherwise, I've little use for those battles, and I keep quiet until they blow over.

Interesting correlation, isn't it? I wonder how many fans these observations really hold true for?

Re: I wonder why...and it makes me sad.

Thank you for the answer, FW, and I think I can only agree with you. Personally, I'm more Dave's and Syd's fan, but I really respect Roger and I really like Rick as a person (though I find his solo stuff not really my cup of tea), and I like what Nick's saying in his interviews (seems to be quite clever)...
But what I absolutely cannot stand is the lack of respet which comes from certain fans.
And I really like the person here with the "saying" nickname - All Floyd Is Good. That's the attitude we need innit ?

"why should you bother with the other side when you know yours is right ?" - which is of course not true.

Re: I wonder why...and it makes me sad.

I agree with you. Though I think all Floyd is good (and all solo is good!), I don't feel the need to try to "convert" everyone to my point of view. One's musical tastes are a matter of personal choice. For instance, I do not need to sit here and "preach" about why you "ought to" like Mr. Wright's albums. If you were interested, that would be another matter. But you have expressed your opinion, and I respect that. That is one form of respect that I think we ought to have.

Another thing--on another board I've visited, people like to personally insult the band members, occasionally in very crude terms. The reason I dislike this is because first, it is rude to do, and second, some people like to use cruel, unfounded rumours about some Floydians in order to make their point. Obviously we do not know these people, so what right have we to behave like that?

One's musical taste is fine, and expected to differ. If we all like the exact same things, life would get very boring indeed. But when it verges into personal insult, that's where I have problems.

On each of the Floydians--the way I see them, they each have their own individual merits. Given the choice to actually meet and talk with a Floyd member in person for any length of time, I would select Mr. Wright; he seems like one of the most pleasant to be around, and I admire the musical talent he has. Given the choice to correspond and exchange ideas by post, I would probably select Mr. Waters; the depth of his albums is absolutely incredible. If I were attending a party hosted by a Floydian, I would most likely choose Mr. Gilmour or Mr. Mason (but I don't know enough about Mr. Mason to know what he's like...any additional information for my website would be appreciated!). And, of course, I very much respect Mr. Barrett's work, but I also respect his decision not to partake of that life anymore.

But just because I think one thing of one Floyd member does not mean I automatically dismiss all of the others. I think it's really very sad when people do that (I am NOT pointing the finger at any individuals! This board, as a matter of fact, has been far better about it than some I've been to.).

Well - we've been trying to cut down on going into those conversations, but we get new members, and obviosly they wanna talk about that and often times let other topics escalate into gibber-jabber on the above mentioned.

There's not much to do except get others back on track.

See, that's a pretty good point. But really, Dave's Floyd sucks. Rog's was way better.

Aww, come on--we don't need to do this here. Really, I don't understand the point of it. You can argue, present your cases, do whatever you want, and I will never understand. My taste (for instance) in music is no better or worse than yours, as far as I'm concerned.

Re: I wonder why...and it makes me sad.

Well, in fact, this forum IS the place to discuss it since Joker Wild started the thread.

Attempting an answer to his/her original question, I'd say that, assuming most members on this site are indeed ardent Pink Floyd fans, after the music which all of us must love, and considering the current condition of Pink Floyd unlimited, there's precious little else to discuss but the very public tensions between Roger and David.

David is alledged to have said this one day. Roger is alledged to have said that a few days later.

Roger is doing a busy Floydian tour (yippee! London included!) next year. Dave's doing some smaller semi-acoustic sets (hoorah!!! in London again!!!) next year.

What d'ya think?

Floydwater. I was joking. Calm down.

I don't think that Waters tour is that great. He's not coming to Canada.

Re: I wonder why...and it makes me sad.

Seen you folks talkin about this, so felt I would put in a bit since this site is new to me. Hope you dont mind.

First let me say, My love for Pink Floyd extends to all the folks that brought it into existance. RIP Syd, and all the fans that passed since the begining. Maybe because I also enjoy playing guitar, makes me have a deep spot in my soul for the lyrics Gilmour puts into space from the strings.

It seems Waters was a natural piece of Floyd from the beginnig untill the cut. Witch BTW I will admit never hit me like any of Floyds other stuff. But of course he is still there in the many things written, and the incredible bass infused for so many. It's sort of like: Waters could take himself out of Pink Floyd but Pink Floyd wills not release Waters.

I mean to say, he has been like a stream flowing away from a mountain. I might say a bit of an angree stream. When a mountain stream has flowed away to the river it is only dry untill the mountain releases more melted snow. So Waters is on ice so to say.

There really is no comparison of the work each have done without Floyd. Though I feel some of Gilmours early solo stuff was extremely good. If Wright had of been with him it might have been as good as Floyd. Deffinately an interesting thought for me. That was late seventies. I dont feel the same about Waters stuff . I think he would need Gilmour and Wright to get closer. In fact I was not even Amused by his first release after Floyd did Momemtary Lapse. Amused was all ready done when Pink Floyd did The Wall, but much better than ATD.(JMO)

The last thing I will question is: Is Pink Floyd as good now as when WaTers was with them? All I can say about that is; what I dont know about this hasn't hurt me. I have thoroughly enjoyed everything released all the way back to the Delicate Sound tour.(was in The King Dome in Seattle WA for that). And I have felt it all is Pink Floyd since then without a doubt. If there is something missing I don't hear it!

It is probably time Waters returned to Floyd. I think they have more to say together. Cant leave this without mentioning Mason, as the other day I heard someone say he was a mediocre drummer. Usually I try not to address someone whom I feel has a very ignorant view of something, but this was begging for an argument. Turned out; this person was a professor in percussion. He had taught drums at a music institute for some years. I was at a used car lot. He was the salesman. Sometimes we dont know how good something is untill we try to replace. Anyway, he did not end up selling me the car.

So, like, who would win in a fight, Roger Walters or David Guilmor?
