Best song or album from a bad band?

On occassion...a band that isn't very good at all just sumble into brilliance and crank out an excellent song. In an even more rare instance, a band cranks out a whole album which is amazing but basically have nothing but crap on all their other albums.

Yesterday I was driving in my car listening to blood, sugar, sex, magic by the Red Hot Chili Peppers and was thinking to myself how amazing that album is. Every song on that CD is really good...except for maybe the last song on the album which is a 2 minute cover song. However, everything else the Chili Peppers put out is almost unlistenable in my opinion. This band really struck gold on that album but hasn't done anything even remotely good prior or since. As far as great individual songs from bad bands I would go with Freebird from Lynyrd Skynard (not sure about the spelling).

I was wondering if anyone could think of any examples of this strange phoenomenon?

Not that anyone would recognize this but the band Quatermass isn't that good except for the ELP style rocker "Black Sheep of the Family".

And I guess I'd have to say I only like the Residents' "Commercial Album" of their output. I can't really single down an album or song with a band I don't like. I usually like all of it or none of it.

Yeah, I'm pretty much the same way.

And Riv: I'm not a giant fan of RHCP, but they do have 3 very good albums: Californication, By The Way, and the one you mentioned.

Ok, here are mine:
-Talking Head's "House Burning Down" isn't half bad. But I really can't stand the rest of their stuff.
-AC/DC's "Highway to Hell" is alright. Otherwise I hate them.

Can't really think of any others...

It's the only one of theirs I have... I liked it. Since none of the others got my attention, I probably agree.

I was trying to think of a good song by a bad band, and it's just not coming to me (but I can think of lots of bad songs by good bands).

BTW, all the vowels in that name are sometimes Y.

'Come Clean' by Hilary Duff is a great pop song, although I can't say I've liked the other stuff she's done (that I've heard, at least). It's that way with a lot of singles, I assume.

I actually liked Linkin Park's first album, however after that they really sucked.

I despise Linkin Park, but "My December" an unreleased song(to my knowledge) is pretty good.
and the White Stripes "Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground"

Yeah, I don't think they are a good band, i think that people are so desperate for anything that sounds decent in music today they make the White Stripes out to be a lot better than they are.
Just my opinion.

The White Stripes are a brilliant band. And that is my opinion(although I'm always right).

Bah! I think the White Stripes are right up there in the ranks with KISS as being the most overrated band of all time. And 7 nation army also gets my vote for being the most over played song in the last year.

They are alright, but I agree, a little overrated.

The Soft Bulletin and Yoshimi Battles Pink Robots are pretty good Flaming Lips albums but the rest are crap (in my opinion).
