What were Rick & Nick's contributions to AMLOR?

It's well documented that both Rick and Nick weren't exactly at the peak of their musical careers whilst this album was being recorded and didn't really contribute that much to the album. But songs did they actually play on? I presume Rick didn't play on every one as he only came into the project at around half time?

I know Rick definitely played on "Terminal Frost" because he's credited with playing piano, and that's the only song I hear a piano on.
I read an article once about Nick talking about how wonderful it was to drum on "Yet Another Movie" because there were so many drum technicians around, etc.
I know Nick's voice can be heard on the "Learning to fly" sound effects, and I'm not sure if that's him on "Signs of life," but it could be.
Other than that, I have to assume that it was like The Final Cut; Rick and Nick just "sort of drifted through it," which shows that Dave should have had more faith in his fellow musicians, even if Roger had messed up their confidence as they say. Which is pretty unfair to Nick since he helped financially to get the project off the ground, even put up his Ferrari or one of his fancy cars from his collection.

By the way, what's this about "Drums programmed by David Gilmour" on the credits for Sorrow in the Echoes booklet? That's not a real drummer?

speaking as a drummer, sometimes we like to just drift along.... in most bands I've played in/with, I usually tend to leave the song writing to the "regular" musicians..... just kinda hang out and am very happy just to play.

not sure if thats all drummers though.

Yeah, except in this case it wasn't just Nick but two other drummers and Dave's drum programming (no, those are not real drums on Sorrow) that drifted through it. Rick also provides nearly-inaudiable backup vocals on Sorrow, and hammond whooshes on Dogs of War, but that's about it as far as their contributions go.

I have no idea how involved either of them were in the recording end of things, but I have a feeling that Rick was fairly involved on the production end.. If any of you have ever listend to Broken China, it becomes very apparent who is responsible for many of the signature production qualities of PF material..

I don't know, "Broken China" was actually kind of over-produced IMO. Great album musically though, buried under a lot of effects.

Rick also plays for sure on Sorrow and On The Turning Away. Mostly his parts are Hammond and bits of Kurzweil synth here and there (and the already mentioned piano on TF obviously). He definitely got involved in the second part of the production, when all the computer stuff was already recorded. He likes more "natural" sounds and this is apparent when listening to Division Bell or his solo works; I think he gives a warmer sound, which I like, to the tracks he contributed more. I also think he contributed to improve the arrangements of the live versions, as documented on DSOT.
About Nick, even if he was involved since the first day, he probably has even less audible parts than Richard. He was responsible for the sound effects and I guess that however he had an important role in production, even if not officially credited.

It just tears me apart that these two musicians had little to bring to the table, but the album is still great, no matter what. I rather like the songs that Rick wrote in the "good 'ol days", but I guess those days are gone because I haven't heard a genuine Rick Wright song in forever.

One more thing, lately I've been starving for live material. I usually don't ask other people's opinions when buying Floyd, I just buy it and form my own opinion; but live albums are a little different---Is the sound quality on 'Delicate Sound of Thunder' very good? I am sure it is, because it was a professional recording. But does it have that "live" feeling to it, you know what I mean?? I'm not looking for duplications of the same song I have on CD already, I want newer & different versions.

Broken China proves that Rick has probably lots of good songs, but no band to contribute to anymore. Which is a shame.

Hope this isn't TOO off-topic, but can anybody tell me if that's Rick playing that gorgeous intro to "On the Turning Away" on Delicate Sound of Thunder? And did he sing the backing vocals heard on that song, and among the voices on Roger's parts for "Comfortably Numb?" (all referring to the DSOT versions here).

I belive that the other keyboardist that PF brought along on the tour (can't remember his name) played the intro. At least he does on the video I have on my PC. But Rick sings backing vocals.

Jon Carin is the man you're thinking of. He's one of the only people who's played in both Roger's and Dave's post-1981 bands. He must be frigging Kofi Annan to be able to get away with that if you ask me.

I think Rog and Dave have got over all those stupid contradictions. They have grown to be mature enough... but just don't want to go trough the experience of being in a band (it's very hard and the four of them have been 20 years! together in one band - that's a feat if you ask me)

About AMLOR, well it's a very very good album, although not Floyd as we know them, it has that intelectuallity of every Floyd album and is very different again like every Floyd album.
