Roger was inspired by the Falklands war. Try Google for further insight: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&i...ieri+falklands

I well remember that period even if I was just 14 years old. The Falkland War (1982) was an "important" war because, late the 20th century, we were seeing a colonial war. Argentina attacked those islets without warnings but England won in a short time and Margaret Thatcher "in the flesh" set foot there as soon as the English troops took Falkland back.
Argentina was under a military dictatorship (Axe, they were dictators, not Margaret Thatcher...) and that stupid (and ruinous) war overthrew that dictatorial government. And Argentina turned into a democratic system.
That war also inspired Mark Knopfler (Dire Straits) who wrote the wonderful Brohters in Arms.

Some months after the Falkland War there was a football match England vs Argentina for the World Cup, in Spain.
Of course I'm writing it because that World Cup was won by Italy.

Another fact got Margaret Thatcher well-known worldwide: the miners' strike early the 90s, when the police hit and thrashed the strikers hard. Of course I'm writing it because this fact inspired Mark Knopfler again for the wonderful Iron Hand ("The Iron Lady" was Mrs Thatcher's nickname).

Sorry Pinkan'the english troops'? The troops were made up of people from all over the UK, and it was not only the 'english troops' who died in the Falklands, before the the Dictator Thatcher set foot on the island. Oh yes it was very safe to set foot there, as all the killing had been done by that time. Ask any Argentinian mother who lost a son on the Belgrano about Thatcher, or any family member in the UK who went halfway round the world to die, and for what? In order to increase Thatchers popularity ratings, and win another election? I lost a good friend in that 'war'. She also devastated whole communities throughout the UK by closing down the mining pits. People were left with no employment and no way of supporting their families, other than State handouts. I looked at the deperation in their faces. I saw grown men , hard men..miners, near to tears. Many of these communities are now rife with heroin addiction, which can be traced back to the closure of the pits and the lack of work. I saw first hand, not through a television screen on the other side of the world in cosy Italy, exactly what has happened. So what if Mark Knopfler wrote some wonderful songs! Big deal! Go round the UK and talk to people who were part of these mining communities and ask them today what they think of Thatcher.

Ohps sorry. I had confused it with the poll tax.
I was thinking that Margaret Thatcher fell after the miners strike but it was the poll tax, in the early 90s (I think 1991), to cause the fall of the Thatcher government.

Sorry Axe, I meant British toops. You know, I'm not from the UK and may mistake the word "English" with the word "British".

I'm sorry about your anger towards me, but I've just noticed that Mrs Thatcher wasn't a dictator. If she led the UK so long, it was because you British voted for her 4/5 times...

I'm Italian and I know what the word "dictator" means... Mussolini kept the power for 25 years and used to send to prison the people who wrote/talked bad of his government...

Yes pinkan I aware of Mussolini. My knowledge of Italian history is very scant, and is gained from what I have read in books and on television. I therefore would not try and lecture someone from Italy on what the regime was like under Mussolini. Iwould imagine it must have been horrendous ?( Please PM me ,and tell me , I am genuinely interested). When I visit countries outside the UK , I always try and seek out ordinary inhabitants so that they can tell me what life, and the events that have governed and changed their lives, are really like. Rather than the sanitised version put out by the news networks, who often twist facts to suit their own ends. If you were aware of the political set up in the UK you would be aware of why 'Thatcherism' was greeted warmly by the electorate, and therfore giving her office for that long period of time. The people of Scotland did not vote (overwhelmingly) for her, but had to endure her nevertheless due to the votes from other parts of the UK. The Poll Tax that you mentioned, was dumped on the people of Scotland first, before the rest of the UK by Thatchers government, like some colonial master. Once it was introduced in the rest of the UK there was riots in the streets. The fat cats in the city got wealthier under Thatcher whilst the ordinary man in the street was hoodwinked into thinking the Right to Buy ( council homes) policy, and owning shares in ( formerly nationalised companies) would elevate them to a new social class. I witnessed first hand Warrant sales by Baillifs( court officials) who would enter peoples homes and remove their property, to sell off because they could not pay their Poll Tax. Those who refused, or were unable to pay, were given a custodial sentence. Thatcher stripped Union workers of the the right to support their fellow workers in their protests for fair pay and decent working conditions. This 'dictator' took away rights which ordinary british people had struggled, and gave their lives for, over hundreds of years to attain. I could list dozens of policies introduced by Thatcher which made a negative impact on our way of life today( if you want, we can discuss by PM) As for being angry at you...no... I'm not. I just don't want the world to think that because they read in a book what a great leader the 'Iron Lady' was, that it was necessarliy the case. however this is only my opinion and I daresay there are people( old and middle class probably) out in the UK who think that everything was great under 'Milk Snatcher Thatcher'.

Well Axe, I'm not saying you're wrong nor the "Thatcher Era" was a great time for the UK. I'm not British and couldn't know it as well as you.
I just wanted to point out that:

1. The Falkland War broke out because of the Argentinian government who suddenly and without warnings attacked the Falkland islands.
(Honk Kong is back to China now, without any war...)

2. Mrs Thatcher wasn't a dictator because she won a democratic election (and then another democratic election, an then another democratic election, etc) to get the premiership.

3. The 1982 Argentinian government was really held by dictators (it was a military dictatorship, to be precise).
Go and ask the Argentinians what they think about that government and that war...

4. Thank God you were born in Europe.
If you regard "Maggie" as a dictator, you haven't the smallest idea of what a disctatorship is.

Over.
And now... let's move to the Dark Side.
