Re: Tablature or sheet music???

Okay, I think I kinda sorta understand. You're speaking in terms of the fretbar though, not where the right hand is placed. Where or what do I do with my right hand while picking these?? All I do is work the X's from the top to bottom from the 15th to 12th fret then??? It's still a little confusing but it's better. I'm just not very familiar with guitars, it's all very very new to me. I'm gonna get back on here monday afternoon and study what you are saying and try to decipher what you and fulghum are saying. Thank you for your help guys, I really appreciate it

Re: Tablature or sheet music???

If you start with the first X and work slowly down (fat string 15 fret, next string 12 fret, same string 14 fret, next string 12 fret etc...) You can hear the intro to WYWH...

This may be boring to everyone else but when I learned it I thought I was GOD

I have to say that teaching someone to play guitar via a message board is similar to teaching a pig to sing. All you really succeed at is pissing off the pig...

I think you're getting your leg pulled here.

Re: Tablature or sheet music???

Then again, I really dont know til I try. Better than what I got now anyways. More than anything even if it doesn't work, I still appreciate the effort that people try to give me. I dunno.

Re: Tablature or sheet music???

Still, that's pretty cool cheapstrat, that's pretty cool about the WYWH opening. Thank you for trying to explain it to an idiot like me, LOL. Think I need to be getting off here for tonight. Thank you for your help.

Re: Tablature or sheet music???

I honestly think that this is a perfectly good way to learn something to get started....The the books will make more sense.

If you are interested there is a DVD called FRETBOARD ROADMAPS by fred sokolow published by Hal Leonard.

VERY helpful indeed. Don t be frustrated. Give it a month or two to get ur fingers used to the strings.

Re: Tablature or sheet music???

Once I get another job maybe I can invest some money into this stuff, I dunno. It's all really confusing more than anything, I've tried a couple times in the past to pick up a guitar and attempt to play but gave up soon after. But like I said I'm gonna try and get back on here monday afternoon and try and follow what you said, cheapstrat. Thank you.

What do you mean, fulghum? You learned to play a different way?

Re: Tablature or sheet music???

I'd say start with chords. Learn them, it's not hard:

http://guitar.to/folder/guitar.html

Learn E, A, and B7 to start some rock n roll stuff. Then G, C and D for no reason... Then Em and Am for some other reason.. you'll pick them up. From this stage you will probably be able to play wish you were here, which I assume you'll know off by heart... Leave some of the tricky bar chords until you need then for a song and learn F before B...

For soloing just pretty much follow what thingummy said with the minor pentatonic scale. Work on bends and stuff as well.

Finally, learn a few little riffs and licks from songs you know really well. Stuff like Day Tripper, Smoke on the Water and even wish you were here...

But yeah, get chord files for songs you like and play along to them. If there's a chord you dont' recognise look it up and keep playing the song. You'll learn loads in no time...
