I think i disagree, i believe ummagumma wasn't that good of a representation of them at the time because they wrote great material before that (saucerful, more) . I think ummagumma was unique, but mainly a fluke in decisions.

| Re: the Mystery of EMBRYO Despite Ummagumma being a "fluke", it was an important transitional period in the history of Floyd. Before, they pretty much sticked to psychedelia, and what singles they tried to sell weren't working. This album allowed them to explore their own creativity to the limit, and right afterwards they came back "together" and whipped out some rather smashing albums. |

Well, I guess you're in for a shock here pal - the studio version doesn't even touch the live version. The live version is amazingly atmospheric and haunting - the studio version is very rushed. They don't get that much chance to build up.

| Re: the Mystery of EMBRYO "Your Time Is Up" is a little better, but it's in the wrong key and there's not as many cool vocalizations.

| Re: the Mystery of EMBRYO Yes, I always prefered that to the b-side version. There are some really good Floyd tracks that never saw release on a proper album.

According to the Pink Floyd Hyperbase: Embryo was recorded i 1969 for 'Ummagumma', but Pink Floyd were not satisfied with the recording. In 1970 EMI got Norman Smith to make a mix of the song anyway - and without accept from the band 'Embryo' were suddenly released on the compilation album 'Picnic'. The album was withdrawn, but later the same version of 'Embryo' were released on 'Works'.

| the definitive "Embryo" the best version of "Embryo" that I've come across is the 13min rendition found on the excellent soundboard boot "Smoking Blues" 11-21-70. Apparently, back in the day, this recording was supposed to be an official EMI release but some technical difficulties during Cymbaline & a lapse in concentration during Fat Old Sun relegated it to boot status. |

| Re: the Mystery of EMBRYO Well, it's pretty close to Breathe musically, but with a harder/more mysterious edge lyrics-wise.

| Re: the Mystery of EMBRYO the studio version on "Works" just doesn't hold the power of the "Smoking Blues" live rendition or the fine version found on Harvested's "BBC Archives '70-'71". |
